The Democrats were walking around in a state of shock.
Holy cow, they were saying to themselves. We’re not total wimps! We don’t have to sit around and let ourselves be slapped silly by Republican bullies and Tea Party scaremongers. We can actually get something done if we suck it up and find a way to pull together.
One minute they were legislative losers, squabbling and scrambling for the off-ramps. The next they were history-makers, sharing chest bumps and goose bumps at the White House. How had the lofty president and the wily speaker suddenly steered them off Jimmy Carter Highway and onto F.D.R. Drive?
[...]
The Democrats held hands, held their breath and jumped over the cliff — not that it was a radical bill. And, mirabile dictu, nothing awful happened. The markets went up. The polls went up. Their confidence went up.
So what exactly happened? This.
Until now, Obama has gotten irritated at those who cast Washington affairs in Manichean terms of strength or weakness and red or blue. He wanted to reason, to compromise, to float in his ivory tower.
But at long last, when push came to shove, he shoved (and let Nancy push). He treated politics not as an intellectual exercise, but a political one. He realized that sometimes you can’t rise above it. You have to sink down into it. You have to stop being cerebral and get your hands dirty. You can fight fear with power.

“Anyone who wonders why there is such anti-incumbent fervor in the land ought to have a chat with Evan Bayh. I didn’t agree with him on every issue, but on the dysfunction in Washington he’s absolutely right. This city is broken because too many of our leaders confuse politics with service. Americans know the difference.”
“Evan Bayh inherited all of his father’s drive for national office but none of his progressive backbone. From his father’s defeat, he seemed to draw a lesson: You can dream big dreams if you’re a Democrat from Indiana — you just can’t be proud to be a Democrat. And that has been the defining principle (to the extent there’s been one) in Evan Bayh’s quarter-century political career, which began with a successful 1986 campaign for secretary of state in Indiana and which now may be ending, with his stunning decision to exit the Senate after two terms.”
[...]
“This has always been Bayh’s way – to position himself as every Republican’s favorite Democrat. It’s how he stepped out of his father’s shadow back in 1986. It’s how he won election as Indiana’s governor in 1988 (even as the Bush-Quayle ticket was carrying the state in a romp) and re-election in 1992.
[...]
“…when George W. Bush launched his “war on terror” and turned his focus to Iraq, no Democrat cheered louder than Evan Bayh. And even when the tragic folly of that war and of the broader neoconservative agenda became apparent, he learned nothing. A confrontation with Iran? Sign Senator Bayh up.”
Another conserva-Dem bites the dust. Good riddance.

This one was as clear a sign of Democratic ineptitude in getting health care reform passed as anything they did…or did not do.
Democrats are privately admitting the deal they made with Sen. Ben Nelson on Medicaid funding for Nebraska was a major factor in souring the America people on the health care reform bill.
Senate leadership inked a deal in December to win over Nelson (D-NE), allowing him to insert pro-life language in the measure and to secure federal funding for the cost of any Medicaid expansion in what has now been dubbed the “Cornhusker kickback.”
It’s been the target of lawsuits and scorn from both the right and the left, and leaders in both chambers believe it ultimately will be stripped from the final measure, whenever one surfaces.
Instead of considering more dealmaking to get a final health care bill passed, Democratic sources privately acknowledge that Nelson’s compromise did more harm than good. Several sources said it tops a list of problems that have hurt the health care process.
Nelson and whoever aided him in getting his little deal done should get their ass kicked. But in the overall scheme of things it was pretty much nothing. If anything, it points to the greed and idiocy of some in thinking they could get use blackmail in getting a sweetheart deal go unnoticed. Morons.
Anyhow, it’s time to move ahead in getting comprehensive health care reform passed and to hell with the Ben Nelsons of the Democratic Party who apparently don’t give much of a damn.
