Who’s More Important…Fish or You?

MediaMatters explains Beck’s latest bout with wackiness.

Seizing on an absurd claim spread by right-wing blogs that President Obama wants to ban sport fishing, Glenn Beck stated on his Fox News program that Obama is attempting to prohibit U.S. citizens from fishing on some of the nation’s oceans, coastal areas, and great lakes “by executive order.” In fact, there is no evidence of any such order, but rather a task force which seeks to “better manage” — not ban — recreational fishing alongside other uses of ocean, coasts, and lakes.

In his words…

“A new report out today says it’s a move to appease the environmental groups, and just like before, without your consent, done in darkness by executive order. I told you a year ago this would happen. I’m not some prophet by any stretch of the imaginations. The New York Times said this man would do this.”

“The report claims that Obama will no longer listen to the public as he tries to prohibit U.S. citizens from fishing on some of the nation’s oceans, coastal areas, and great lakes, even some inland waters. No more fishing. Really? Yeah, apparently some environmentalists want to save the fish. Forget about the frickin’ fish. People are losing their rights. Who’s more important: the fish or you?”

I actually wasted thirty minutes of my life last night and caught this Glenn Beck segment live. Not only did he rattle on about Obama wanting to take away your fishing privileges but in his best performance of mock rage, he pounced on progressives for the high percentage of federal lands in the country.  He did his darnedest to make the case that Obama (or was it Mao…he uses the two names interchangeably) is to blame for this territorial takeover of America.  All quite bizarre.  Nothing quite pleases this man, including the teachings of Jesus Christ.

“I’m begging you, your right to religion and freedom to exercise religion and read all of the passages of the Bible as you want to read them and as your church wants to preach them . . . are going to come under the ropes in the next year. If it lasts that long it will be the next year. I beg you, look for the words ‘social justice’ or ‘economic justice’ on your church Web site. If you find it, run as fast as you can. Social justice and economic justice, they are code words. Now, am I advising people to leave their church? Yes.”

Who exactly is this man’s audience and how long will this shtick go on?  I would think it’s wearing thin for even the most fervent teabagger.  And then again…maybe not.
