The entire Brietbart/Sherrod/White House story could be summed up nicely with these words by David Gergen.
“An ideologue injects poison into the internet, other people rush to judgment on camera, and an administration gets stampeded and commits this travesty of justice. The NAACP has at least had the courage to come back and say ‘we were wrong’ and apologize. Now the administration needs to to the same thing. The president — tonight — ought to order the Agriculture Department to reopen this case, give this woman a fair hearing, and — if the facts are as they seem — reinstate her with an apology. Indeed, I think she deserves a whole lot more than an apology. I think she deserves honor for her attempts to bring people together.”
The White House has become so spooked by the likes of Fox and media criticism that they allowed themselves to get hoodwinked by a scumbag. If the ACORN affair was not enough notice that Brietbart has no journalistic ethical standards by which he stands by, then what more is needed?
If there is anything positive to come out of this sorry episode, it is that the White House might grow a spine and realizes that nothing they do or don’t do will stop the smear and criticism from the right. Nothing.
If they can understand this simple fact then they would be better prepared to just push on and do what they think is best for the country. Being concerned about the Brietbarts and Limbaughs is a waste of time and can only lead them into the type of folly which they displayed in the unfair treatement of Shirley Sherrod.

A hearing? It’s obvious that Ms. Sherrod was railroaded in this whole mess and the NAACP jumped the gun, and of all things fired her on her Blackberry. That was just wimpy, and strange on their part. The White House is denying they had anything to do with her firing. I want to see how that pans out. I do agree that this administration seems to shy away from issues that pop up of a racial nature. They need to step up though. I understand the mentality, because all those racist’s and the GOP loves this stuff want to see the first black President go down, at any cost. Which usually means us, average working America. Maybe a hearing would be in order, to at least show how this mess came about and why so much of the media jumped the gun on this story. I love Rachel Maddow on this topic yesterday. Actually, her entire program was excellent. Someone, Rachel, finally took up the story of the Iroquois LaCross team and the passport issue. They deserve far better treatment then they have been getting on this mess.
Err, pardon me! It was Secretary Tom Vilsack of the department of agriculture that fired Ms. Sherrod, of course. I have been making mistakes like this a lot lately. Sorry.
In a previous blog from Mr. Chase (The Rational Middle), we were advised to the effect that going after racism in the Tea Party was choosing the wrong battle. Listen to this VMX messaage. If you think this is rare, I can add any number of viscious chain mails from wingnuts employing epithets and hate that make this VMX seem like child’s play. I save each one in the hopes of using them soon with independents and moderates to show them what these people really are. And make no mistake, they are legion.
Michael: we agree to disagree, but know this: accomodating this racism smacks of Chamberlain and Munich. It’s plain wrong in any context and at any time.
I can’t even talk about it, I’m still so angry. But, I do have several unanswered questions that I think are at the core of this whole fiasco, and they need to be DEMANDED of PIG Breitbart.
Who is his source at the production company for NAACP? Is the NAACP investigating how this video got into the hands of Breitbart? Did he really only get that clip and later the full video, which he alleges? Why would he not get the entire video to begin with (this is where he is probably lying), and who really did the editing? Does the production company for the NAACP have the legal right to release the property of the NAACP?
I don’t think this should go away, and if there are any LAWS broken in regards to this whole incident (starting with Breitbart), then my feelings right now are that Ms. Sherrod should not take her job back (if asked), and file a lawsuit.
It was a ‘loophole’ in the FCC regulations that allowed Fox News, in it’s infamous lawsuit, whereby the court ruled that Fox News has the RIGHT to mislead, lie to the public, and withhold information. Now would be a good time to find out just what that loophole is…..AND CLOSE IT!
Not quite sure what the ’cause of action’ would be if there were to be a lawsuit, but I’m checking on this with my Lawyer friend.
And lastly, I am a FIRM believer in FREE SPEECH AND THE MEDIA, what I’m not for is a ‘loophole’ in FCC REGULATIONS that allow Fox News and others to be FREE TO LIE,DECEIVE THE PUBLIC AND WITHHOLD INFORMATION!
What? I think the world has turned completely crazy. I realize that the GOP are not known for their honesty. But I don’t blame Obama at all. First, its not even clear that he had anything to do with firing Sherrod. Secondly, how on earth are we to survive as human beings when the only thing we can do is deal with lies. I am completely sickened by this news story. And your little article is more disturbing because it shows just how negative this world is. You blame Obama for believing a news video. Come on! Its news! Its a video! I can’t believe the world we live in. Fox news and this guy Breitbart need to take ALL the blame for being absolutely horrendous human beings.
