Pat Buchanan – The White Man’s Savior

I like Rachel Maddow.   Aside from her politics, intellect and full command of the issues, her respectful and engaging style is most welcome in a media world filled with blowhards.   She does battle here with Pat Buchanan over the Sonia Sotomayor nomination and affirmative action.  It starts with a clip of President Obama in full oratorical form addressing the NAACP.

.

Maddow is right. Buchanan is locked in a 1950s mentality.  Aside from his racist overtones, he is factually wrong on a number of things he said.  MediaMatters (with full links) points them all out.

  • Sotomayor has written a number of law review articles.
  • Blacks did die at Gettysburg and 200,000 fought in the civil war of which 38,000 of them died.
  • Nearly 2000 African-Americans took part in the Normandy invasion.
  • 1.2 million African-Americans served in World War II along with hundreds of thousands of other Hispanic, Asian and Native Americans.

Yet, Buchanan makes the statement that “this has been a country built, basically, by white folks in this country.”  This was his response as to why 108 of the 110 Supreme Court justices have been white males.  What?  While it is true that the country was founded by “white folk”, it has been built by the collected effort and suffering of Americans of all skin color.

If Republicans have any real intent on becoming a Big Tent party which is home to more than white males, they’re going to have to do better than Pat Buchanan as a spokesman.  Surely there must be young, forward looking young conservatives who are not locked in a 1950s-60s mindset.  Time to put Pat out to pasture.

  1. Maxene says:

    MSNBC Must stop trying to stifle Pat Buchanan’s free expression. We should demand they allow him to wear his hood and robe on TV!

  2. Jonathan says:

    No one should be surprised at anything Buchanan says. He is conservative’s most distinguished racist who cloaks himself in a suit and tie.

  3. Janine says:

    I heard there is a ranch in Texas where old white republicans can go and live out their remaining years. Pat will be comfortable there.

  4. Bill says:

    Have to watch out for those bigoted racists. They come in many different disguises.

  5. Sonia says:

    Pat Buchanan exemplifies exactly what is wrong with Republicans in this modern era. They have a difficult time containing their anger over whites sharing any degree of power with minorities. They hide behind the constitution and the flag and talk endlessly about patriotism but what is evident is their bigotry and narrow minded view of the world.

    On the upside, while conservatives rot away in their stagnant pool of hate, the country is evolving without them. The demographics are changing as minorities form a larger part of the population and the Pat Buchanans are driving them all to the Democrats.

  6. catlover says:

    @Sonia “stagnant pool of hate”

    Sounds right.

  7. MouthWideOpen says:

    @mario piperni
    This is what I was talking about last night with my boyfriend. This was if not the best one of the best interviews since the inception of her show. I have loved Rachel since she was part of the MSNBC team during the elections.

    She did not give up! Good for her. She was talking over him just like Chris Matthews would do when he had guts! I wonder if someone is paying off Chris Matthews to tone it down? Back to Rachel. Rachel even looked different last night. As if she had gotten a makeover or new haircut, makeup seem different. She was on and very sure of herself and it is not easy to stand up to Pat Buchanan, he does not stop.

    I am never happy with what Buchanan says but last night I believe he just dug a big grave and totally exposed himself and Rachel aided him in his task. White Boys Club! Yes they need the hoods and they can start as far as I am concerned with Scalia.

    He has nothing to say and his republicans have nothing to say so it is just his opinion that Sotomayor is not qualified for the job! Please, you are the one that is not qualified for your job anymore. You, Pat Buchanan as Rachel Maddow clearly stated it, ARE DATING YOURSELF! Move with the times Buchanan. What was was and what is IS! And it is starting to look more and more like a color blind society so you might become part of the minority (which I know that is your biggest fear of all!)

  8. Dahl says:

    When Pat speaks the sound you hear is the death gargle of the last of the chauvinist white male. Bless their little heart!

    Will the last white man that follows Pat please shut the door.

    TGIF: Thank God I’m Female!

  9. All of you are soooo right on tonight!!! If Pat hates minorities, just imagine how he will suffer in agony as he has to learn to hate himself as he rapidly becomes one of the smallest minorities in America! The Old White Racist Men Minority! Thank god they don’t really breed all that fast, (unless they are taking lessons from folks like Sanford and Ensign!) Let’s hope that they become an ever smaller and ever less believed in minority!

  10. Randi says:

    I watched the things come out Pat’s mouth and I was just speechless. I couldn’t believe someone on national television was saying these things. Call me naive. And this is the man who thinks Palin is this incredibly intelligent woman. give me a break.

  11. Leonard says:

    It is my humble and very conservative opinion that there is some validity to what Pat Buchanan has been attempting to so graciously expose here and in other MSNBC political shows today. Pat tried to englighten the Rachel’s of the world and empower us White Boys!

    Somebody had to do it! The old man charged like a Don Quijote without giving up. Made me proud to be a White American Boy!

  12. MouthWideOpen says:

    @Leonard
    @mario piperni
    Did you not also hear your dear Pat say that minorities had not fought in the wars when you White Boys have managed to send all the minorities to the front lines!

    I thought it was “the back of the bus.” Would it not also apply it to keep them in the back at war? No. That would be in a color free society. They are “expendable” is what you White Boys say and they have died in bundles.

  13. Bill says:

    One racist is the same as the other.

  14. Janine says:

    @Leonard,

    I respectfully disagree, haven’t the White Boys been empowered and in power for quite a long time. It seems that now the balance of power is ever so slightly shifting the fundamentalist White Boys are bereft at the loss and are acting out, trying to power grab with slippery hands. There is a decided scent of desperation in the air and desperate people throw appliances everywhere hoping they’ll take out somebody, something or some ideal. That is what is sounds like Pat Buchanan is doing.

    I heard somewhere, and I do not know if it is wholly accurate, that about 1% of our DNA codes our skin color, hair color, eye color and whether or not we are female or male. For the sake of discussion, let us say 1% of my body is my hand. I’m not about to let that 1% dictate with whom I associate or how I perceive another individual, I’d rather extend that hand in friendship.

    Leonard, I ask this in all seriousness because I’ve never been given an answer, even though I have asked conservatives before. Please explain to this 90% White Lady what is so wrong with dispensing with color definition, please explain why we cannot just deal with each other as humans, after all that is our common denominator.

  15. Bill says:

    Janine…”what is so wrong with dispensing with color definition, please explain why we cannot just deal with each other as humans”

    That is precisely what affirmative action DOES NOT do.

  16. Dahl says:

    Only place where skin color should be mentioned is when a victim gives a description of the perp to the police.

  17. Janine says:

    @Bill, well, I wasn’t talking about affirmative action

    @Dahl, excellent point

  18. Leonard says:

    @Janine
    It has not been a bad power ridden concept while it has worked for us White Boys. They were the founding fathers that have led us to the democracy of this country. It seems that it will not work for us White Boys any more because the Club seems to be getting veeeery colorful.

    @Janine its all about power and yes I agree we all should deal with each other as humans and because of that is that I agree with @Bill in that affirmative action segregates rather than unite.

    @mario piperni

    And I dedicate this song to Pat Buchanan:

    “Play your funky music White Boy….!”

  19. Janine says:

    @Leonard,

    Thanks for your answer. Although some would argue with your statement “it has not been a bad power ridden concept” I do understand what you are saying.

    Leonard, veeeeeerrry colorful isn’t all that bad is it? After all veeerry colorful makes a rainbow, a fantastic sunrise/sunset and where would we be without colorful garments..???

  20. Leonard says:

    @Janine
    I only wear black and white clothing and everything in between, that is gray or khaki.

    Trying to say that I am not a very colorful guy and I do look so handsome in black! :)

    I leave the colors to continue their mission of adorning the rainbow.

  21. Janine says:

    @Leonard,

    okay, but Dude, black white khaki and grey… while I’m sure you do look handsome in black add a red bow tie or somethin’

    Hey, how do I add the smiling face thing?

  22. Leonard says:

    @Janine
    I have tried color for years and when I look in the mirror I remove the garment immediately. No red tie. Green eyes is the extent of the color here.

    1. You type a “:” and then a “)” – one next to the other and it will look like that but when you send it it changes to the face, for example: :)

    2. You can also do the smiley with a wink and instead of : you do ; for example: ;)

    3. You can also do a laughing one with a : and a D. for example: :D

    Try them all one after the other. Its fun.
    :) ;) :D

  23. Leonard says:

    @Janine
    By the way, being a black and white person is not such a bad thing. My lack of color makes the woman that stands next to me glow.

    And that was not a come on. Just my perception.

  24. Janine says:

    @Leonard,

    okay i’ll give it a whirl.

    a: a) a; aD

  25. Maxene says:

    When a man says “it’s not a come on, it’s a come on” ;)

  26. Bill says:

    maxene, only to very presumptuous women. ;-)

  27. Leonard says:

    @Maxene
    Not. Its not a come on. Women have taught me that no is no and Not is Not. I like to explain myself so as not to get in trouble with the oppositve sex.
    @Bill
    I would not say presumptuous. It is just @Maxene’s perception and that is ok.

  28. Maxene says:

    Are we name calling Bill, I didn’t say he was coming on to me. I was just stating what I know from personal experience. I’m not about to debate u on this silly thing.It was a moment of levity that you obviously could not follow. Bye the way, you will never get a smile from
    me. I save that for those that are not negative and argumentatve at just about everything.

  29. Leonard says:

    @Janine
    Just type
    : [then just next to it without any spaces in between]
    Just type
    )

    And u will get your smiley. Try again. :-)

  30. Maxene says:

    Thank you Leonard for settig bill straight on this. He appears to find an unkind word to say more times than not.
    That tell me a lot about a person. It is sad indeed. Now I’ve said enough about this silly subjet.

  31. Bill says:

    maxene, I’m not sure what you think you’re reading between the lines. Generally speaking, a winking smiley face means the comment is made in jest.

    I’ve gone back over my comments. I don’t see anything that could be considered “unkind”. If you can point me at one, I’ll attempt to explain.

    The thread was about racism. My comments were on subject with the exception of the one aside to your comment. I agree racism is not a good thing. But I don’t think Conservatives, Republicans or even Pat Buchanan have an exclusive lock on it, and I posted a video to support that. And that is apparently where I differ with most of you.

    I didn’t bother to point out that in MY opinion, I found Rachael evasive, unwilling to answer any question that would have proven her ambiguity on the subject. Nor did I bother to comment that she was much more the racist in her comments and actually, Buchanan was correct and left Rachael stuttering and unable to answer.

    Had I done so, that would have been more argumentative than this is worth. And as someone else put it so wisely, I’m in the wrong venue to articulate Conservative, or even differing viewpoints.

    Have a good day. (Note: That wasn’t a “Come On”.) :-) (Further note, that’s a “smiley face” indicating a joking demeanor. Kinda sorta.) :-)

  32. Maxene says:

    @Bill LOL, back to this nonsense Yes I do know what a smiley face is and how to use it. I actually know a lot more than that, but let’s not go into that now. I never inferred you or anyone else was coming on to me. Also I was not referring to that post exclusively when I mentioned you made unkind statements. It’s a new day. Move on. Note: no smiley face, which means I’m damn serious. I’m a busy woman. (note lack of smiley face here as well)

  33. Bill says:

    maxene, thank you. I’ll assume I have made no unkind statements as it was not my intent. Enjoy your ice cream.

    And try smiling more.

  34. Janine says:

    @Leonard,

    ooohhhh, I see how I misread the instructions!
    :)

  35. Maxene says:

    @Janine we are so proud of you :)

  36. Bill says:

  37. Janine says:
