Allowing guns in bars was loony enough but now Tennessee’s new gun bill allows permit holders to carry guns in parks.

Cities and counties across Tennessee are preparing this week to deal with the fallout from a raft of pro-gun bills recently signed into law in the state, where Republicans are flexing their new-found strength in the legislature.

Among the new laws is one that would allow people who have permits to carry guns to carry them in all public parks in the state, including local parks. Another would exempt from federal regulation guns and ammunition made in Tennessee and kept within its borders.

The guns-in-park law is crazy enough but the “Tennessee Firearms Freedom Act” is as controversial.

[The Act] says that firearms and ammunition made and sold within the state, and stamped “Made in Tennessee,” are beyond the jurisdiction of the federal government. The theory is that if firearms are not sold across state lines they cannot be considered part of interstate commerce and are therefore exempt from federal regulations.

So what’s the deal with Tennessee?  Even Wyatt Earp understood that leaving guns at the door made for a safer Dodge.  The answer might lie here…

Whatever the practical result of Tennessee’s new gun laws, they may well serve a political purpose: firing up the conservative base before next year’s state, local and congressional elections.

“The Republicans are trying to embarrass the Democrats,” said John Geer, a political scientist at Vanderbilt University in Nashville.

“They want to put these proposals on the table not only because they believe in guns, but they want to force the Democrats to come out as anti-gun,” he said. “You can see the attack ads forming already. The Republicans have won this issue.”

    We can usually agree on your images. But alas, that is a stupid image.

    South Carolina, Texas, Utah and Montana have passed similar legislation. Several other states have similar legislation on tap. Not everyone is comfortable with the Federal Government regulating every aspect of their lives.

    I won’t debate it with you because I know you are wrong. People willing to break the law carry weapons in places where they are banned, regardless of the law. Law abiding citizens will not and are therefore are at the mercy of these criminals. If a person is trained and permitted to carry a firearm, he should be allowed to carry it within the restrictions of the law wherever he goes.

    Simple, forehead slapping logic. If you outlaw guns, only outlaws will have guns. That may be a little low on the intellectual scale for you. I can help you with “Simple Logic Comprehension” if you desire.

    Gun laws and Weapons Free Zones have stopped no one bent on mayhem. All it does is ensure people like Von Braun, Columbine and the Virginia Tech murderers that they will be slaughtering defenseless, law abiding citizens.

    With that said, for my part, if you will leave my state alone, I will continue to leave your blog alone.

  5. Just wait till the first “accidental” shootings! “Oops! I missed my intended target!” In the heat of the moment, reflexes are not trustworthy. I know. I was trained for years to shoot. My family kept a stockpile of guns. When it was time to use them, we missed more skunks and snakes than we hit. And we practiced several days a week. Sometimes we hit the tin cans and targets, other days we missed and hit the woodpile they were mounted on. I swear some days we couldn’t hit the broadside of the barn. Other days we were magnificent! Hitting everything well. How well will you do when it really matters? If you are coming out of a sound sleep to defend yourself…forget it! Your eyes are almost crosseyed! If you are feeling threatened?…Your nerves are raw and adrenaline will make your hands shake. Police will tell you that more people are shot with their guns in their own homes even when not attacked than ever use them correctly in self-defense! Carrying concealed is something my dad did and almost killed one of us! He quit doing it. He was a lifelong NRA member but even he knew when common sense should prevail. Even trained professionals screw up with firearms and the thought of briefly trained “civilians” carrying gives me the willies!
