President Obama flew to Dover Air Force Base and saluted as 18 coffins returned from Afghanistan. Liz Cheney found reason to criticize.
“I think that what President Bush used to do is do it without the cameras. And I don’t understand sort of showing up with the White House Press Pool with photographers and asking family members if you can take pictures. That’s really hard for me to get my head around…It was a surprising way for the president to choose to do this.”
Liz Cheney, like her dad, is a liar.
It’s not clear exactly what Cheney is referring to when she says, “Bush used to do it without the cameras.”
It’s true that Bush’s Pentagon continued a long-standing policy of banning cameras at Dover when the nation’s fallen arrived in flag-draped caskets from foreign battlefields. (Upon taking office, Obama lifted the ban.)
So that covers “without the cameras.”
But as CBS’s Mark Knoller reported yesterday, Obama was the first president to visit arriving dead at Dover during the wars in Afghanistan or Iraq — meaning that when it came to taking trips to Dover like Obama did yesterday morning, Bush never used to “do it” at all.
Maureen Dowd adds…
She’s right: There were no press cameras at Dover in the previous administration. There was also no W.
While Bush occasionally visited the wounded and the families of those killed, he never went to Dover to salute the fallen. And he barred any media coverage of it, trying to airbrush the evidence that the wars he started were not the cakewalks he had promised. He did not attend a single funeral. It reflected an emotional and spiritual smallness typical of his administration, like Donald Rumsfeld signing letters to families of dead troops with an autopen and Paul Wolfowitz understating the number of war dead.
Integrity is obviously not a Cheney trait.

Didn’t Liz Cheney’s father, Dick, dodge the draft FIVE TIMES! She has no ground to stand on when she defends her father, while attacking this President’s character. She is like the Spawn of Satan criticizing the Easter Bunny. There is no comparison.
There were no cameras because Bush didn’t want people reminded how many young Americans died for their country because he chose a war that shouldn’t have been. He never went to see them because he didn’t give a damn for the fallen but was more dedicated to making more armaments for Cheney’s friends at Halliberton.
It was surprising to Liz Cheney because she is as cold as her parent and as long as young lives are lost in their duty to protecting America, then that and only that counts. She can’t get her head around the visit because she has nothing to wrap her head around with.
So why doesn’t Obama follow the advice of his Military Commanders? Wouldn’t this seem to be in the best interest of protecting the American lives being lost everyday while this failure dithers, sucking up to people like you?
Scoring radical, idealist, left-wing, liberal brownie points appear to be more important to this flop of a President than American lives OR success on the battlefield.
Wow Tennessean. I guess Anomaly100 wasn’t exaggerating about you.
@Frances: It gets a little scary when someone defends Liz Cheney in the comment threads with her father’s talking point of “Obama’s dithering”.
Frances, I guess it just depends on what area of an 8 year old’s logic and rhetoric you want to listen to. Anomaly will have to get back with us in the morning. His mommy made him go to be early.
When he gets up and his mommy allows him more computer time, get him to point out where I defended Liz Cheney.
Furthermore, I didn’t attack her, Dowd or anyone else. My objection is with the President and the manner in which he has conducted and is conducting his office.
My objection is with the President of the United States’ apparent indecisiveness in the face of our enemies.
@tennessean: I am a woman, not a man. I go to bed early because I have responsibilities which I call, “life.” Good night again Tennessean or….Larry?
Anomaly, I know. The bus to grammar school runs early.
@Tennessean: Grammar school? Is that one of your attempts at humor or is it something completely off topic? The bus?!
anomaly, move on.
@Tennessean: It sure is great to see you advertising for MoveOn!! I think they’re great too.
Anomaly, you really should seek help for your problems. Isn’t there enough new stuff going on??
