On Conservatives and Madness

.

Marc Ambinder asks a poignant question I’ve often asked myself.

Serious thinkers on the right have finally gotten around to a full and open debate on the epistemic closure problem that’s plaguing the conservative movement. The issue, to put it in terms that even I can understand, because I didn’t study philosophy much in college: has the conservative base gone mad?

This matters to journalists, because I really do want to take Republicans seriously.  Mainstream conservative voices are embracing theories that are, to use Julian Sanchez’s phrase, “untethered” to the real world.

Can anyone deny that the most trenchant and effective criticism of President Obama today comes not from the right but from the left? Rachel Maddow’s grilling of administration economic officials. Keith Olbermann’s hectoring of Democratic leaders on the public option. Glenn Greenwald’s criticisms of Elena Kagan. Ezra Klein and Jonathan Cohn’s keepin’-them-honest perspectives on health care. The civil libertarian left on detainees and Gitmo. The Huffington Post on derivatives.

I want to find Republicans to take seriously, but it is hard. Not because they don’t exist — serious Republicans — but because, as Sanchez and others seem to recognize, they are marginalized, even self-marginalizing, and the base itself seems to have developed a notion that bromides are equivalent to policy-thinking, and that therapy is a substitute for thinking.

[...]

With the advent of Fox News and the power of that echo-chamber, complaints about liberal media bias are quite irrelevant — the reaction to it being like lupus’s reaction to the body, as Jon Stewart correctly noted.

The Radicalization of the GOP

David Frum appears to be the only sane conservative left out there.  He discusses the extent to which Republicans have hurt themselves by choosing the obstructionist way.  Smart stuff.

John Birch Society: They’re Back!

.

Well here’s a sign of where Conservatives and Republicans are headed.

One of the hallmarks of post-Buckley, Movement Conservatism has always been the conscious exclusion of the John Birch Society as an extremist group. But at this weekend’s CPAC conference they were finally allowed in. Here’s John Birch Society President John F. McManus, at the Society’s sponsor table.

No one should be surprised. At a time when the biggest thing in the conservative movement are teabaggers denouncing everything Obama, the John Birch Society fits right in.  Hey, you can’t ever have too much intolerance and ignorance with today’s modern conservatives.

Money & Health Care

An interesting and revealing dialogue between William Shatner and Rush Limbaugh…
.

.
This explains it all.

Shatner: If you have money, you’re going to get health care. If you don’t have money, it’s more difficult.

Limbaugh: If you have money you’re going to get a house on the beach. If you don’t have money you’re going to live in a bungalow somewhere — that’s — that’s…

Shatner: Right, but we’re talking about health care.

Limbaugh: What’s the difference?

Shatner: The difference is we’re talking about health care.

Limbaugh: No…

Shatner: Not a house or a bungalow.

Limbaugh: You’re assuming that there’s some morally superior aspect to health care than there is to a house or a bungalow.

If there is no morally superior aspect to health care than there is to owning a house on the beach, then what is the point of discussing this issue with conservatives?  If health care comes down to how much money one has, then there is little surprise that these people have been holding up reform for 50 years.  It is the equivalent of attempting to have a conversation with someone who speaks an entirely different language.

We seldom hear conservatives being so openly honest about their true thoughts on why they oppose the things they do.  We can thank Limbaugh the egoist for the honesty.

Going Over The Cliff

teabag republican http://mariopiperni.com/

.

Something they’ve been discussing in the Comments section is a post at Little Green Footballs on why one person made the decision to leave the right. Here is the post.

Why I Parted Ways With The Right

1. Support for fascists, both in America (see: Pat Buchanan, Robert Stacy McCain, etc.) and in Europe (see: Vlaams Belang, BNP, SIOE, Pat Buchanan, etc.)

2. Support for bigotry, hatred, and white supremacism (see: Pat Buchanan, Ann Coulter, Robert Stacy McCain, Lew Rockwell, etc.)

3. Support for throwing women back into the Dark Ages, and general religious fanaticism (see: Operation Rescue, anti-abortion groups, James Dobson, Pat Robertson, Tony Perkins, the entire religious right, etc.)

4. Support for anti-science bad craziness (see: creationism, climate change denialism, Sarah Palin, Michele Bachmann, James Inhofe, etc.)

5. Support for homophobic bigotry (see: Sarah Palin, Dobson, the entire religious right, etc.)

6. Support for anti-government lunacy (see: tea parties, militias, Fox News, Glenn Beck, etc.)

7. Support for conspiracy theories and hate speech (see: Alex Jones, Rush Limbaugh, Glenn Beck, Birthers, creationists, climate deniers, etc.)

8. A right-wing blogosphere that is almost universally dominated by raging hate speech (see: Hot Air, Free Republic, Ace of Spades, etc.)

9. Anti-Islamic bigotry that goes far beyond simply criticizing radical Islam, into support for fascism, violence, and genocide (see: Pamela Geller, Robert Spencer, etc.)

10. Hatred for President Obama that goes far beyond simply criticizing his policies, into racism, hate speech, and bizarre conspiracy theories (see: witch doctor pictures, tea parties, Birthers, Michelle Malkin, Fox News, World Net Daily, Newsmax, and every other right wing source)

And much, much more. The American right wing has gone off the rails, into the bushes, and off the cliff.

I won’t be going over the cliff with them.
