Climate Change’s False Debate

Ed Begley Jr. gets it perfectly right here.
.

.
What makes me laugh about the position held by climate change deniers is their claim that global warming is a hoax which somehow has hundreds of thousands of scientists and government officials from around the world working in unison to fool an entire world’s population.  The thought process does not get any dumber than this and demonstrates a complete lack of understanding of how the scientific process operates.

As Begley points out, science is all about peer review.  No organization polices itself with more rigor and honesty than the scientific community. If a scientist gets it wrong, then you can bet your last dollar that his ideas will be ripped to shreds by other scientists. This is what they do. This is what science does. There is no tolerance for error or conjecture which cannot be supported by scientific fact and/or experiment.  To think that a million scientists would choose to deceive the world on climate change is the thinking of fools.

One last point on the dolt’s idiotic rage about the government walking into his home and forcing him to stop using incandescent lightbulbs.  As someone noted, did this guy complain when the government outlawed lead in paint or asbestos in homes?  Did he shout out, “I don’t want the government telling me I can’t paint my baby’s room with lead paint. Stay out of my house!”

To wrap this up, let me quote myself from a previous post.

Climate change deniers work hard to make it appear that there is a real debate going on within the scientific community on whether or not man has had a significant impact on global warming.  There is no such debate beyond the propaganda one hears from conservatives on Fox and elsewhere.  The real debate concerns itself with the mechanisms which drive global warming and not on whether it exists or on whether man has had a detrimental effect on climate change.

Unless one is a qualified scientist, all we can do is take a look at who is saying what.  On one side we have the UN’s International Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) composed of the world’s leading scientists.  We have the top scientific institutions from EVERY industrialized nation in the world all on the same page.  We have the disciplines of climatology, geology, chemistry, physics, etc. all working independently and coming to basically the same conclusion: man is a major cause of global warming.  We have a ton of peer-reviewed articles published in the leading scientific journals to back up their claims.

On the other side we have a handful of scientists (literally, a handful), conservative politicians and industry people who discount the case for global warming.  A large number of the denier’s scientists have been shown to be on the Exxon payroll and Exxon itself has spent millions on lobbyists and propaganda campaigns to create the illusion of a scientific debate.  There are no peer-reviewed scientific studies to which the deniers can point to to back up their fraudulent claims.  This is a faux debate.

Jim Inhofe’s Flat Earth Approach To Climate Change

jackass http://mariopiperni.com/

.

The wackiest member of Congress after Michele Bachmann is no doubt Republican Senator Jim Inhofe.  Inhofe has been battling climate change legislation with a passion and fervor that borders on pure hysteria. He will be leading a contingent of crazies to the Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen next month (he calls it a “truth squad“) to reiterate his claim that man-made global warming is a hoax.

Dana Milbank writes on how Inhofe is beginning to find himself increasingly isolated from his own party on the issue of climate change.

It must be very lonely being the last flat-earther.

Sen. Jim Inhofe of Oklahoma, committed climate-change denier, found himself in just such a position Tuesday morning as the Senate environment committee, on which he is the ranking Republican, took up legislation on global warming. Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) was in talks with Democrats over a compromise bill — the traitor! And as Inhofe listened, fellow Republicans on the committee — turncoats! — made it clear that they no longer share, if they ever did, Inhofe’s view that man-made global warming is the “greatest hoax ever perpetrated on the American people.”

“Eleven academies in industrialized countries say that climate change is real; humans have caused most of the recent warming,” admitted Sen. Lamar Alexander (R-Tenn.). “If fire chiefs of the same reputation told me my house was about to burn down, I’d buy some fire insurance.”

Finally! A common sense statement from a Republican Congressman – not a common sighting these days.  And look, there’s more.

An oil-state senator, David Vitter (R-La), said that he, too, wants to “get us beyond high-carbon fuels” and “focus on conservation, nuclear, natural gas and new technologies like electric cars.” And an industrial-state senator, George Voinovich (R-Ohio), acknowledged that climate change “is a serious and complex issue that deserves our full attention.”

So where does all of this leave Inhofe and his inane, baseless beliefs?  Alone, hugging a polar bear on the last remaining ice floe, I hope.

Climate Change Gets Another Dose of Reality…

Climate Change - Penatagon http://mariopiperni.com/

.

Climate change concern has moved into the realm of national security.

The changing global climate will pose profound strategic challenges to the United States in coming decades, raising the prospect of military intervention to deal with the effects of violent storms, drought, mass migration and pandemics, military and intelligence analysts say.

Such climate-induced crises could topple governments, feed terrorist movements or destabilize entire regions, say the analysts, experts at the Pentagon and intelligence agencies who for the first time are taking a serious look at the national security implications of climate change.

One example…

…the continuing conflict in southern Sudan, which has killed and displaced tens of thousands of people, is a result of drought and expansion of deserts in the north.

I wonder if any of this will be enough to sway any of those conservative global warming deniers that it might be time to start listening to scientists instead of Exxon lobbyists.   Life must be a bitch for Republicans and conservatives when their distorted and simplistic black and white world view gets messed up with shades of reality.

Conservative Misinformation On Climate Change

fox-newsroom

.

The WorldNutDaily had one of its typical screaming headlines the other day.

EPA’s own research expert ‘shut up’ on climate change

Fox News has been running with the story as further proof that man made global warming is a hoax and that censorship was in play.  The clincher was the following global warming denier and all around fanatic…

“He came out with the truth. They don’t want the truth at the EPA,” Sen. James Inhofe, R-Okla., a global warming skeptic, told FOX News, saying he’s ordered an investigation. “We’re going to expose it.”

Inhofe wants a criminal investigation into the matter.  Okay.  So who wrote the paper which the EPA supposedly buried? Well, according to conservatives, he’s a “senior operations research analyst” at the EPA.  Sounds impressive.  Except that Alan Carlin, the author of the paper, is not a senior operations research analyst.  He’s an economist, not a climate scientist, who has has been taking on the global warming topic as a hobby.  No one at the EPA solicited his “expertise” and no one asked for his “research paper”.  In fact, a NASA climatologist referred to Carlin’s report as,

“a ragbag collection of un-peer reviewed web pages, an unhealthy dose of sunstroke, a dash of astrology and more cherries than you can poke a cocktail stick at.”

Did this little detail, that Carlin is not a climate scientist, deter Fixed News and other conservative ‘news’ outlets from sensationalizing the story and portraying him as an expert? Nope.

STEVE DOOCY, co-host, “Fox and Friends”: Good morning. Most of us are not scientists. You are. You’ve worked for the EPA for 38 years. Tell us in a nutshell what your report said this spring.

ALAN CARLIN, EPA analyst: The most important finding was that EPA in my view needed to look at the science behind global warming and not depend on reports issued by the United Nations which is what they were thinking of doing and have done.

DOOCY: And, in fact, it’s problematic because for the last 11 years, temperatures had been dropping. So your report pretty much turned the whole global warming debate on its head, and what happened to your report? I understand it was hushed up.

CARLIN: My supervisors decided not to forward it to the group within EPA who had the responsibility for preparing an overall report which would guide EPA on whether to find that the emission of global warming gases would be something that EPA should regulate.

GRETCHEN CARLSON, co-host: And why should Americans care about that? Because they just passed cap and trade Friday night, at least the House did, and maybe this report could have changed some of those congressmen and women’s minds. Here’s the email from your supervisor after you submitted the report. It’s unbelievable.

It says this. “The time for such discussion of fundamental issues has passed for this round. The administrator and the administration has decided to move forward on endangerment, and your comments do not help the legal or policy case for this decision. I can only see one impact of your comments given where we are in the process, and that would be a very negative impact on our office.”

Glenn Beck also had Carlin on his show, armed which charts and “facts”.  Hey, nothing is more convincing than an economist posing as a scientist with an armload of charts.  Sadly, Fixed News viewers watch this garbage and honestly believe they’re getting the story.  Propagating ignorance is what Fox and a large part of the conservative media do best.

Fixed News: we lie while you remain clueless! Sucker!
