“An iceberg four times the size of Manhattan has broken off Greenland, creating plenty of room for global warming deniers to start their own country,” Markey said in a statement. “So far, 2010 has been the hottest year on record, and scientists agree arctic ice is a canary in a coal mine that provides clear warnings on climate.” [...]
He said it was “unclear how many giant blocks of ice it will take to break the block of Republican climate deniers in the US Senate who continue hold this critical clean energy and climate legislation hostage.”
Scientific studies link human activity with the phenomena of shrinking sea-ice and yet deniers deny. There are many things in life you can be wrong about and still recover from. These include investing in a bad stock or choosing a wrong spouse. While each has it’s own unique period of recovery, the fact remains that you can lick your wounds and move on if you so chose. Climate change unfortunately does not grant one that same luxury. Choosing to do nothing about a warming planet and melting ice caps is a decision which carries fatal and irreversible consequences.

I was thinking the very same thing Mario. :( Conservatives can’t just live in their own kick-ass little world. Because when it goes down, the rest of the world goes with it.
One question I have posed in many other places – but have never gotten a satisfactory answer – is whether it’s not a better idea all around to avoid messing up the world just for its own sake? Nobody in their right mind wants to sleep in a bed that’s been peed and crapped in.
Even if human contributions to climate change are minimal, it’s just a good idea not to aggrivate the process. If the deniers think it’s expensive now, how much worse is it going to be in another generation? On the other hand, I have yet to hear from a wingnut who doesn’t believe in doing the right thing for its own sake, either because there’s no profit in it or from the belief that something is being taken away.
Just this last weekend I was discussing global warming with a family friend. He is a conservative christian and does not believe in global warming, believes the earth was created about 6000 years ago..
I used the scientific data approach and his answer was that all the scientists are in collusion with each other. I asked why would they be, what would their master plan be? He said to try to cast doubt in the christian community about the age of the earth and that further scientists are always trying to prove that God does not exist.
I pointed out how science and theology can go hand in hand but he was having none of that and then just started quoting scripture.
Needless to say we moved on to another topic, the heat wave in Russia (which didn’t have anything to do with global warming it was just hot!)
And so for my family friend, I’m afraid he will not believe in global warming until it makes a direct impact upon his existence or comes a knocking at his door
My father, who received an MS degree in chemistry, refused to accept the notion that the sun is a star like the other stars in the galaxy. I found it hard to accept the way his profession and his beliefs were out of sync.
If global warming is a hoax and we follow Gore the worst that could happen is that we end up with cleaner air and water etc.If global warming is happening the worst that could happen is the end of life as we know it.The stupidity of the deniers boggles the mind.
