For a president under siege, maybe this could help.
In an episode of “Mythbusters” on the Discovery Channel to be shown on Dec. 8, President Obama will help determine whether the Greek scientist Archimedes really set fire to an invading Roman fleet using only mirrors and the reflected rays of the sun.
Producers of the television series are not saying exactly how Mr. Obama will help prove — or disprove — that myth. But the first presidential appearance is intended to help spur interest in math and science as part of the White House effort to increase American competitiveness in those subjects.
The right is going to find much to criticize about the President appearing on Mythbusters. ‘Disrespectful to the office’, ‘demeaning’, blah, blah, blah. Let them. The following is from 2006 but I doubt much has changed.
The disappointing performance of U.S. teenagers in math and science on an international exam, in scores released yesterday, has sparked calls for improvement in public schools to help the country keep pace in the global economy.
The scores from the 2006 Program for International Student Assessment showed that U.S. 15-year-olds trailed their peers from many industrialized countries. The average science score of U.S. students lagged behind those in 16 of 30 countries in the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development, a Paris-based group that represents the world’s richest countries. The U.S. students were further behind in math, trailing counterparts in 23 countries.
President Obama on Mythbusters? If it helps spark interest in science, then why not.

I love posting the above illustration because it pisses off right-wing kooks as much as it does. No other illustration of mine has generated more hate mail than this one. Obama Derangement Syndrome runs deep.
New York Times interview with Barack Obama. A good read.
And so what I feel good about is the fact that even as we were in the midst of crisis, we were still able to keep our eye on some of these bigger long-term problems and have started moving the country in the right direction.
Now, there was a price to pay for that, and that price was primarily political. If I had not had a crisis before me, we wouldn’t have started with a stimulus bill, which was easy to caricature as a big-spending liberal agenda. I certainly would not have had to shore up the banking system in a way that rightly generated a lot of frustration among people who wondered why it was that the very folks who caused the financial crisis seemed to be landing on their feet and getting help from the government.

Something that I have learned over the last couple of years is that I have to make decisions based on the long view. And I have to suppress my own desire for a short-term fix if I’m going to be able to lead the country effectively over the long term… I will keep on making that case, and I think that to point — to quote my vice president — I believe that voters are going to stop comparing me to the Almighty and compare me to the alternative.
The problem is one of having enough people understand that very point in a time of deep recession – a time when the President faces an opposition more concerned with getting back into power than they are about the welfare of the people they were elected to serve.

As the midterms get closer, E.J. Dionne looks at a fired up President Obama and the positive effect it’s having on Democratic enthusiasm.
…progressives keenly understand how much their aspirations would be set back if an increasingly right-wing Republican Party won one or both houses this fall.
That’s why liberal blogs are rallying behind scores of Democratic candidates. It’s why the “enthusiasm gap” about this year’s election is slowly closing. It’s why labor and civil rights groups have organized their One Nation Working Together march this Saturday.
And it’s why the polls have begun to show signs of a modest Democratic revival.
[...]A president who largely disdained a mobilizing strategy for his first year and a half in office has returned to his community-organizer roots to try to salvage an election. Here’s the further irony: He has a real chance of pulling it off, which leads to a question. If Obama succeeds, will he continue to keep his supporters engaged and “fired up,” as Sanders suggests he should? Or will he go back to an insider strategy that helped bring him to the brink of this precipice?
Keep believing.

I can’t for the life of me see how the Democrats retain the House under these economic conditions, but that cannot and does not mean that what Obama has done in his first year and a half is a failure. On the contrary. On almost all the substantive stuff, he has in my view done the right and responsible and sane thing within the almost impossible constraints he was presented with. And given the legacy he inherited, what he has done is simply not enough to perform an economic or political or cultural miracle. That’s the brutal truth and we have to face it. And if Americans thought they were voting for a savior, rather than a pragmatic president, they were deluding themselves.
[...]
In the end, these difficult practical decisions will count because they have to count. And Obama’s persistent refusal to take the red-blue bait still pushed by Fox News like a cheap bump of ideological meth is to his credit. It is emphatically not about his failure to “take them on”. He is taking them on – but on his terms, not theirs’.
In all this, the president deserves constructive criticism, but also moral and political support in engaging actual problems with actual solutions. Those on the left and in the middle who once saw his potential have no reason to abandon him now. If you were one of them, he needs you and this country needs you now more than ever before.
Liberals should take comfort in those words and if they don’t, they’re just not getting what this President is all about. When Barack Obama wins his second term, many progressives who were overly critical of the way in which this President handled himself in these first two difficult years will owe him an apology.
As for the GOP and the next two years, I like what Steven Benen had to say.
Republicans have already backed themselves into a corner — they’ve made the president out to be the devil; they’ve all but ruled compromising; and they’ve committed to a path that almost certainly ends in a government shutdown. GOP leaders may have even deluded themselves into thinking that they’re more popular than Obama (they’re not), and that if a shutdown hurts the economy, they’ll avoid blame (they won’t).
There has to be a price to pay for putting party before country, if not in 2010 then surely in 2012.

Oh yeah, this is a wonderful idea and just what the President needs in this current climate of Islamophobia.
ISLAMABAD – In a development that could be duly termed as one and only of its kind, an incumbent Government’s Minister has urged US President Barrack Obama to offer Eid prayers at Ground Zero Mosque and become “Ameer-ul-Momineen” of Muslim Ummah.
Minister of State for Industries and former member Pakistan Ideological Council Ayatullah Durrani called TheNation on Wednesday to register his demand made to President Obama.
“The coming Eid would expectedly be observed on 9/11, this a golden opportunity for President Obama to offer Eid prayers at Ground Zero and become Amir-ul-Momineen or Caliph of Muslims. In this way, all the problems of Muslim World would be solved,” he thought.
Durrani argued that Muslim World was in “dire need” of a Caliph and the distinguished slot of Caliphate would earn President Obama the exemplary titles of what he termed, “Mullah Barrack Hussain Obama” or “Allama Obama.” “The time is approaching fast. Barrack Hussain Obama must act now. This is a golden opportunity, Muslims badly need it,” he added, saying that the elevation of President Obama to Muslim’s Caliphate would be the “key to success.”
The sad part is that for many on the right, President Obama already is the Caliph of Muslims. Just ask Pam Geller.
