I have never heard the President more emphatic in his determination on getting a health care bill passed by Congress. He literally told Democrats to have an up-or-down vote on a health care bill in the next few weeks. This was his tacit approval on getting it done via reconciliation.
“This has been a long and wrenching debate,” Mr. Obama said, adding that while health care “easily lends itself to demagoguery and political gamesmanship,” that is no reason “for those of us who were sent here to lead to just walk away.”
“The American people want to know if it’s still possible for Washington to look out for their interests and their future,” Mr. Obama said. “They are waiting for us to act. They are waiting for us to lead. And as long as I hold this office, I intend to provide that leadership. I don’t know how this plays politically, but I know it’s right. And so I ask Congress to finish its work, and I look forward to signing this reform into law.”
Powerful stuff.
To Republicans, he basically said:
* F**k you. You’re a bunch of self-serving asses more interested in playing politics than looking out for the best interests of Americans.
* I’ve incorporated a number of your proposals, so shove it.
* You’ve used reconciliation 16 times to pass some major pieces of legislation. It’s my turn…and besides, your obstructionist ways leaves me no choice.
To Democrats…
* Hey, you chicken-livered, yellow-bellied wusses. I’ve waited long enough. Get this damn bill passed!
To Americans…
* The majority of you want health care reform. Republicans have muddied the waters to the point where most of you don’t know what’s in the proposed bill. Here it is again. It’s about you, for you. I’m getting a health care bill passed and if you decide I’m wrong, vote me out of office in 2012. Until then, I campaigned on reform. You gave me a majority of your support. I’m following up and getting health care reform done.
I like this guy.

RE: I like this guy,
SO DO I!!!
& I loved your summary!
One of the most lucid, well thought out speeches he has given in a long time. I still believe he can be a great president. The times require action and leadership and it appears that he is the person to take the lead.
@mario totally agree with this statement:
“I have never heard the President more emphatic in his determination on getting a health care bill passed by Congress”
It was about time he stepped to the plate. Proud he did. Let’s see if he can pull it off with this politcal nonsense going on.
