    Does he have a choice?

  2. Firefly says:

I don’t think so. If we lose GM, we’re talking about hundreds of thousands of job losses both direct and indirect. Then there’s the consequences of the U.S. watching one of its corporate giants going under. It would be disastrous. The president has got to do all he can to save GM, and hopefully Chrysler, from disappearing.

  3. obamaman says:

Of course he does. They should have been allowed to file Chapter 11 Bankruptcy long ago. Renegotiate union contracts and bond debts. And by now, they would most likely be on the comeback. Then if the Government wanted to step in and be helpful and in a fiscally responsible manner, they could guarantee any warranties for vehicles bought while they are under Chapter 11 Protection.

What the Democrats dare not lose is the support of the UAW and Union Workers across the US. And you can sure bet Union Leaders are letting the Democrats know that if they let GM go under and kill all those union goodies, they can forget about union support for the foreseeable future!

  4. arctic_tundra says:

More wingnut baloney. By your logic, the $13 billion given to GM by the BUSH ADMINISTRATION last year was only done so to appease the unions?

  5. obamaman says:

You’re right. How positively…..wingnutty of me. The Unions have historically supported Republicans for many years. Right??

At least my logic, as it were, extends beyond insulting those who think differently than I do. If you spend more time trying to comprehend and less time trying to insult, you might understand that my statement was that they should not have received ANY bailout money. It’s not a “political” thing with me. It’s a responsibility thing.

I’m surprised to learn from people posting to this blog that Fiscal Responsibility is a “Wing Nut” characteristic.

  6. arctic_tundra says:

If you’re being honest here and it’s not a political thing, then why did you write, “What the Democrats dare not lose is the support of the UAW and Union. And you can sure bet Union Leaders are letting the Democrats know that if they let GM go under and kill all those union goodies, they can forget about union support for the foreseeable future!”?

Maybe because it is a political thing with you. There’s no need to try to mask your intent. Were you bitching about unions when the previous administration bailed out GM to the tune of $13 billion?

  7. obamaman says:

I’m not sure what your problem is. I AM sure that I really don’t care.

I don’t think the money should have been given by either administration. And for what it’s worth, then President Elect Obama made it known to the Bush Administration that he felt it was a priority that the bailout money be given and if it wasn’t, it would be his first priority upon taking office. And I’m not saying that exonerates anyone from anything. Those are just the facts.

I’m not trying to mask anything. Why would I? What do I care what a “liberal wingnut” thinks? I’m just stating a fact. The Unions have long been staunch supporters of the Democratic Party. If you don’t know and understand that, I’m not sure you’re qualified to be commenting on this subject.

Are you so naive as to think they aren’t reminding them how many of them they have helped elect over the years, now that their professional necks are on the block? If the UAW goes down, what do you think that spells for Unions in the US?

And to further inform you, since you seem so lacking, I’ve been complaining about unions most of my adult life! I’d like to see the auto manufacturers file for bankruptcy if for no OTHER reason than to bust the unions.

Now….go out and find where the Unions have backed a Republican Candidate for a major office then get back with me. I haven’t been able to find such an instance.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Republican_Party_(United_States)

“Republicans are generally opposed by labor union management and members, and have supported various legislation on the state and federal levels, including right to work legislation and the Taft-Hartley Act, which gives workers the right not to participate in unions, as opposed to a closed shop, which prohibits workers from choosing not to join unions in workplaces”
