Not since Theodore Roosevelt has a President appointed 3 members of the opposing party to his cabinet. It will be announced today that Judd Gregg (R New Hampshire) is the new commerce secretary, joining two other Republicans in Obama’s cabinet – Robert Gates (defense) and Ray LaHood (transportation).
Gregg followed 4 years as New Hampshire’s Governor with 16 years as a US Senator. A fiscal conservative, Gregg is a smart, respected senator known for both his willingness to speak his mind as well as his loyalty to the people he advises.
It’ll be interesting to see if conservatives give President Obama credit for acting upon his campaign promise to work on creating a new, less-divisive Washington. Appointing 3 Republicans to his cabinet is not an insignificant matter and a great start to his presidency.
