When hate replaces reason

The murder of Kansas doctor George Tiller is tragic. It’ll be interesting to see what Bill O’Reilly has to say tonight. Dr. Tiller and his abortion clinic have been a topic on O’Reilly’s show at least 29 times. O’Reilly has referred to Tiller as “a baby killer”, of doing “nazi stuff”, of being a moral equivalent to al-Qaida. He has said, “This is the kind of stuff that happened in Mao’s China, Hitler’s Germany, Stalin’s Soviet Union.”

So is O’Reilly to blame? Who knows. What we can say with certainty though, is that inflammatory talk by high profile personalities is always dangerous. One never knows who is tuned in nor their state of mind. This has always been the gripe I’ve had with the O’Reillys, Limbaughs and Savages. Their hate-filled rhetoric practically begs some crackpot to take matters into their own hands.

Here’s a glimpse into how impassioned some get over the abortion issue.  This is what they’re saying in Twitter world:

# UPDATE… Doctor George Tiller was aborted today in his 204th trimester – aren’t paybacks a bitch
# oh HAPPY DAY! Tiller the baby killer is DEAD!
# George Tiller the baby killer was shot dead this morning. God bless the gunmen who hopefully won’t be caught.
# was George Tiller the baby killers brain scrambled the way he scrambled full term fetuses.. one can only hope
# Infamous baby killer George Tiller gunned down at (irony) church. Why do I not feel sorry for him? Have fun at Judgment Day.
# tiller the baby killer shot dead…wow. is it insensitive of me to say what goes around comes around?
# George Tiller the Baby Killer shot dead. May he rot in Hell.
# Tiller Baby Killer was shot and killed this morning Justice has been served.
# Thinking about “Tiller the baby killer” He now knows the wages of sin is death.
# May Tiller rot in Hell , infanticide is the murder of babies, he WAS a provider of death like Hitler, Bundy the list goes on….
# Burn in hell George Tiller
# No need to pray for George Tiller. We know he went straight to hell!!!!!
# Good ridence to Tiller – babies will not be murdered because he is now gone. Wonder how he likes hell!

Hate’s an ugly thing.

  1. BlancaCarta says:

Here’s what Randall Terry, the head of the anti-abortion group Operation Rescue, said.

“George Tiller was a mass-murderer. We grieve for him that he did not have time to properly prepare his soul to face God. I am more concerned that the Obama Administration will use Tiller’s killing to intimidate pro-lifers into surrendering our most effective rhetoric and actions. Abortion is still murder. And we still must call abortion by its proper name; murder.

Those men and women who slaughter the unborn are murderers according to the Law of God. We must continue to expose them in our communities and peacefully protest them at their offices and homes, and yes, even their churches.”

  2. Sara says:

“Those men and women who slaughter the unborn are murderers according to the Law of God.” sounds a lot like concepts within Shria Law that the neocon/repubs shriek about as untenable and means for the US to charge into war in the Middle East and beyond. The hypocrisy is overwhelming.

  3. liberalsRs....d says:

    “So is O’Reilly to blame?”

Following this logic, if some deranged liberal reads one of your many “I hate Bush/Cheney/Conservatives rants and runs out and shoots a Republican/Conservative, are YOU to blame?

That’s the problem with these “Hate Crimes” issues. Too much room for abuse in the interpretation.

I don’t agree with the murder of Tiller, any more than I agree with him sucking late term babies out of the wombs of women and flushing them down the toilet. But I can understand the mentality that would think he should be stopped at any cost. NOT AGREE WITH IT. But understand it. Kinda like the “If you had known would you have killed Hitler” question.

I am sympathetic with the turmoil and tragedy to Tiller’s family. Tiller had been operating on the edges of law, if not unlawfully for some time.

I think the kindest thing I can say is yesterday, he reaped the whirlwind.

  4. mario says:

I don’t do rants. And I’ve never stated that I hate anyone. I leave that sort of stuff to the fanatical right. Ty.

  5. Leonard says:

I agree with Sara. What is the difference between extremists in any religion? When murder is a justifiable response to a perceived wrong, then how are the fringes of the religious right in this country any better than those who adhere to Shria Law. What is as disturbing is to read those Twitter comments and realize how skewed the thinking of so many.

  6. liberalsRs....d says:

If you say so. I think if you look back over some of your more vitriolic offerings you may want to reconsider that statement.

I found this video. I thought it was done very well addressing this tough subject.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G8K7fpRYt4c

There are some very gruesome images out there depicting exactly what the horrific results are of these types of abortions. I will not post any of the links here as I personally find them very, very gruesome. But if you want to remove some of the mental anesthesia of desensitizing terms like “Pro Choice”, “Fetus” or “Late Term Abortion” and see it for what it really is, feel free to Google it and view the images…if your stomach is strong enough.

Neither my stomach OR my heart is that strong.

btw….before all of you go postal, I am pretty much of the same inclination as your President on most issues concerning abortion. I’m for preventing unwanted pregnancies. I’m for education. I am NOT for wholesale, on demand abortion. And I am absolutely against any type of inhumane late term abortion or a late term abortion performed for anything other than issues concerning the health of the mother or the reasonable viability and quality of life of the baby.

Anyway you look at it, abortion is terminating the life of a baby. It should not be taken lightly.

There is no such thing as a “successful” abortion. In any sense of the word. The baby always dies.

  7. jeannie says:

The man is a hatemonger, capitalizing on fear and anger as his currency of exchange. sadly, there will always be a “space’ for folks of this ilk.

His behavior is despicable, and his ethics, which one may assume he is quite proud of, are craven at best. He, like Limbaugh and Coulter, make substantial incomes trading in hate and fear.

Ultimately, these folks don’t really care about the core issue, I suspect. It is about capitalizing on fear.

  8. liberalsRs....d says:

Based on your comments, I would think you never watch his show. You could not be MORE wrong.

  9. mimi says:

Maybe you should find out the women’s stories before you believe that. There is much more to the stories than O’Reilly, Rush, and Randall will say.

I’m also sure that the women who chose abortion did not choose it lightly. Late term abortions are only done when the health of mother/child are at risk.

One of the abortions included a child who had no face. There was no way to eat, breathe.

One had a disease that his bones would be shattered upon birth.

Doctor Tiller was one of maybe 2 who could help these women. Let me repeat, late term abortion can only be done with the health of the mother/baby at risk.

You are believing the propaganda. You’ve heard Alan Keyes screaming about Obama’s vote in Illionois. Did you ever find out about that vote?

    http://blogs.chicagotribune.com/news_columnists_ezorn/2008/01/from-the-archiv.html

There are many stories on the internet about women’s experiences with Doctor Tiller. Shall I get the links for you, Libby?

  10. mimi says:

Hilzoy has a few of the stories in this entry:
    http://www.washingtonmonthly.com/archives/individual/2009_06/018420.php

  11. mimi says:

I read on the twitter that O’Reilly is going to defend himself against his long tirade of hate-speech regarding Dr. Tiller. It would be good if he included Randall on his show.

  12. liberalsRs....d says:

Yeeeeesssssssss mimi. I have heard some of the stories. Like the one I heard earlier of a 14 year old girl that said she was “pushed” to have the procedure. Her “rape” went unreported by “Doctor?” Tiller. She was given a solution to kill the baby then instructed to sit on a toilet and “push” basically delivering her dead baby into a toilet.

Look, I do not agree with killing the man, although I can see why some might feel it is justifiable homicide. I personally think it would make an interesting case to allow the Suspect to plead innocence on the grounds of justifiable homicide (if that’s a legal plea) and let it play out in court. (Would “murdering” Hitler have been “justifiable” homicide? Apparently many of his Generals thought so.)

Again, Tiller operated on the edges of the law if not unlawfully. He performed abortions on underage girls without reporting their “rapes”. He played loosely with whatever laws or regulations there are.

His death is an unnecessary tragedy for his family and I am sympathetic for their grief. I cannot find it in my heart to feel sorry for him.

But since you’re so good on them Bible quotations:

“they that plow iniquity, and sow wickedness, reap the same.” (Job 4:8)

    and…

“whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap.” (Galatians 6:7)

  13. mimi says:

Me? Bible quotations? No. I used only because it was Pat Robertson. I do not spout off bible quotations. He does. And, it was easy to google. I used to show what a hypocrite he is.

Libby, you should really be posting these comments over at the freepers board.

  14. jeannie says:

Are we back in Dodge City now? How ludicrous to try to defend Tiller’s murderer on any grounds. If Tiller’s death is justifiable in any way, then what is there to prevent anyone from murdering the murderer claiming likewise?

  15. Janine Wallace says:

I find it dichotomous that those who protest against killing an innocent human life don’t have a problem taking another human’s life.

The hate filled vitriol of the O’Rielly, Limbaugh, Savage triangle only fuel those of our nation who are the anti-everything fringe. Hate is very powerful, certainly with the power of the web we can work to counter act that.

  16. liberalsRs....d says:

Why? You guys are supposed to be open minded and enlightened. Aren’t you open to at least HEARING opposing thought?

How can you take issue with anything I have said? I don’t think he should have been shot. I can understand why some would think it justifiable. And while I am sorry for the loss, grief and tragedy to his family, I can’t find it in my heart to feel sorry for the man.

    Those are my opinions.

  17. liberalsRs....d says:

Another person that has never actually watched “O’Rielly” [sic]

  18. liberalsRs....d says:

I didn’t “say” it was justifiable. I said I thought it would make an interesting defense and court case. If he was declared innocent, then he wouldn’t be a “murderer” would he?

  19. liberalsRs....d says:

And I find it “dichotomous” (?) that one would try to equate taking the life of an unborn child to executing a known and convicted criminal.

  20. jeannie says:

Why not say what you really think instead of dancing around the issue. Is the person who shot and killed Dr. Tiller a murderer in your opinion?

  21. Janine Wallace says:

Because assumptions are dangerous I have often watched/listened to O’Reilly, Limbaugh and Savage so the statements I make are based on that background

  22. Janine Wallace says:

Executions are for the justice system to mete out. Sounds like some anger management techniques are in order, can suggest some….

  23. liberalsRs....d says:

While I feel his actions were wrong, I would not convict him of First Degree Murder. It will be interesting to see if that is how he is charged.

And before you start whining, is the woman that kills her husband because he abused her EVER charged or convicted with First Degree Murder?

  24. Lantos says:

I’ve watched O’Reilly more times than I can count and my opinion of him is that he is in the business of Bill O’Reilly and nothing else. Facts and truth do not have great relevance to this man.

From your repeated refrain, are we to understand that to watch O’Reilly is to find him anything but the lying egomaniac he has shown himself to be?

  25. liberalsRs....d says:

Why? I’m not angry. I’m just expressing my opinion.

  26. liberalsRs....d says:

“From your repeated refrain, are we to understand that to watch O’Reilly is to find him anything but the lying egomaniac he has shown himself to be?”

If you are intelligent and not fatally biased, yes.

  27. liberalsRs....d says:

I would doubt that very seriously. But if you are telling the truth, then see my response to Lantos.

  28. liberalsRs....d says:

Mario, would you please place one of your pictures here so I in the future I can just respond, “Nice Picture, Mario.” ??

  29. mimi says:

All the disagreements we’ve had, I’ve never been angry with you. Until now.

  30. liberalsRs....d says:

    So…you’re NOT open minded.

    I’m not angry with anyone.

  31. liberalsRs....d says:

……but you have irritated me a few times. I’m sure you’re a very nice lady. I think you are misguided on some subjects. But being misguided should not necessarily negatively impact innate good qualities.

  32. mimi says:

One of the people on the forum I belong to did some research (focusing on the 90′s) about how pro-lifers consider this justifiable homicide. A feeling I get from Libby’s comments.

I don’t think she’d mind my pasting some of it here:

“She [Catherine Ramey] argues that the [Biblical] burden of proof that “innocent lives are being taken contrary to moral law” has been met and that the Biblical right to self-defense can be extended to defend a third party from an unjust aggressor.”
    http://www.popline.org/docs/1288/141371.html

On Michael Bray’s A Time to Kill,
This book presents a rather convincing argument for the use of force in the defense of the unborn.
I find myself on the horns of a personal dilemma in this regard. I have some personal conscience issues
that would prevent me from the active use of force. Yet I would not condemn those whose conscience has
led them in the other direction. I hope this book receives the serious attention it deserves.

To Church’s Dismay, Priest Talks of ‘Justifiable Homicide’ of Abortion Doctors
    http://www.nytimes.com/1994/08/24/us/to-church-s-dismay-priest-talks-of-justifiable-homicide-of-abortion-doctors.html

Softly and articulately — with a few jokes sprinkled in — deParrie explains how the Bible justifies the calculated killing of abortionists.

It’s not one of those pretty biblical mandates like love your neighbor as yourself,” says deParrie, his green eyes shining with intensity above a ragged red beard. “But hell is not a pretty doctrine, either. There are lots of unpretty doctrines in the Bible. Yet if God wrote the Bible, I have to abide by it whether I like it or not.

ACLA is a coalition of people and organizations that held its first official event in August 1994 in Jackson, Mississippi. ACLA was formed in 1994 following a meeting in Chicago in April 1994 during which there was a split in the pro-life movement over the use of force. Defendants, many of whom had signed the Defensive Action petition approving the murder of Dr. Gunn, refused to commit to non-violence.

  34. mimi says:

I watched that story on O’Reilly. Her parents took her. It was a 5-day process. The girl says she doesn’t remember anyone explaining. Over 5 days? Am I to believe that? Or should I believe she was in shock maybe? And her parents were guiding her through? And, how is it that her parents never knew she was pregnant until then? Do you not think there is more to this story? Because, I do.
