Republican’s Campaign of Lies Against Planned Parenthood

This is what right-wing insanity sounds like…on a good day.

[Planned Parenthood] deals out nothing but deception, death, personal devastation, and moral degradation. Never will I agree to give that bloody, indecent, immoral organization one penny. I will not be satisfied until it is outlawed.

The above words were part of an email that North Carolina Republican State Rep Larry Pittman sent to Planned Parenthood in response to the following letter sent out by PP urging NC lawmakers to not defund the organization.

Planned Parenthood is an essential community provider in North Carolina. Each year, at nine health centers across the state, they provide over 18,000 tests for sexually transmitted infections, over 11,000 life-saving breast and cervical cancer screenings, and contraceptive services to more than 61,000 women.

Planned Parenthood makes the case that the organization’s work actually helps in cutting down on the number of abortions performed each year by providing contraceptive services. Wingnuts like Pittman aren’t listening. Despite the fact that abortion services only account for 3 percent of Planned Parenthood’s revenue (all non-profit, btw), Pittman is still able to say:

My sources tell me that 75 percent of [Planned Parenthood’s] income comes through abortions.

Typical right-wing crap. When the facts are not to their liking, they have no qualms in making up a new batch to match their thinking on whatever it is they’re trying to smear, destroy or revert back to Victorian norms. Logic doesn’t work on these people (contraception results in fewer abortions – could anything be more obvious?) and facts have no meaning for them (they create their own), so what is one to do?

Do your best to vote these dishonest, intellectually challenged vermin the hell out of public office. Not always possible, but certainly well worth the effort.

  1. You’re missing the point, Mario. To the GOP women belong at home – barefoot and pregnant. Keeping them from obtaining contraception helps them achieve that goal. Next step is to not provide them any government assistance so they will be totally dependent on their man — they want to return us to the days when we were no more than mere chattel. No voting rights, no right to own land, no right to a divorce – unless the man consents. Back to the days of dowries so our fathers will pay them to take us off his hands. They want our jobs, too.

They want Ruth walking 10 steps behind.

  2. Sydney says:

The ideology of the right, if implemented in its entirety would cause actual suffering and death to many American citizens. I believe that the only way for the rightwing supporters to realize this, is for them to actually see the suffering and death, close up….and personal.

  3. E.A. Blair says:

“…contraception results in fewer abortions – could anything be more obvious?”

Actually, to a lot of wingnuts, contraception is no different from abortion.

  4. Marcus D. says:

Anyone who believes that only 3% of PP’s activities involve abortion has been sipping from the crazy straw. PP is in the business of abortion. When Liberals decide to be honest about that, then we can have a rational discussion about how much government funding they should be entitled to.

  5. Put up or shut Marcus — as Romney has recently stated — where’s your proof of your statement — no right wing bloggers allowed — actual facts from a real live credible source.

  6. redState girl says:

Marcus, they’re going to ask for proof. Here it is.

    http://www.lifenews.com/2012/01/05/planned-parenthood-51-of-its-income-comes-from-abortions/

Planned Parenthood’s abortion income was 51.5 percent of its clinic income.

  7. Marcus D. says:

Thank you redState. But they probably won’t accept it as proof unless it is stamped by some leftwing authority.

  8. redState girl says:

I know, Marcus. They need MediaMatters or Rachel Maddow’s seal of approval before they believe anything

  9. Sydney says:

Jesus Marcus…..your like a wart, which most of the time is easy to ignore and you almost forget its there…but everyone in a while, it will grab your attention, and you just want to pick it off so you don’t have to deal with it anymore.
Why in gods name should PP have to prove to YOU their abortion to well care ratio?
Bush caused hundreds of thousands of deaths during his adventures in the whitehouse and I never saw or read one opinion of a rightwinger that questioned how their tax dollars were spent and the association of federal money to the death of innocent civilians.
Diane…I don’t believe that the GOP wants to strip woman of all their rights, I believe that after the 2010 census, and the shocking revaluation of a future white minority……………that they want to build up their ranks. Poor red state woman forced to breed like cattle, and encouraged to home school, will surely guarantee them like minded supporters, the last thing the rightwingers want is free thinkers, and they are well aware that if things continue as they are, their herds of sheeple will die out…so they are thinking ahead.
Marcus……I have been familiar with planned parenthood for 40 years. My 3 daughters who all suffer from a “female problem” which is not the business of you and your buddies, have used PP services at less then a quarter of the price of a private doctor. Find some other conspiracy theory to concern yourself with…such as …..what is in Romneys
Taxes that is so devastating he must keep them secret.

  10. Actually, Politifact does a fairly decent job,.

But let’s start with your pro-life site (which in itself calls their analysis into question, as the clearly have an agenda).

They’re basing their number on the dollars – not the number of procedures performed. Now, it really doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure out that an abortion would cost considerable more than condoms or birth control pills.

So by using the analogy they used, they ginned up the answer they were looking for. Not hard.

Now Politifact says this as far as the number of procedures performed:

Contraception (including reversible contraception, emergency contraception, vasectomies and tubal sterilizations): 4,009,549 services

Sexually transmitted infections testing and treatment: 3,955,916 services

Cancer screening and prevention: 1,830,811 services

Other women’s health services (including pregnancy tests and prenatal care): 1,178,369 services

    Abortions: 332,278 procedures

Miscellaneous (including primary care and adoption referrals): 76,977

    Total services: 11,383,900

By this tally, abortions accounted for just under 3 percent of the procedures Planned Parenthood provided in 2009, which is the most recent year for which the group is reporting statistics. And that would make Kyl’s statement way off.

We should note a few caveats.

First, we think many people would acknowledge a difference between providing an abortion and, say, handing out a pack of condoms or conducting a blood test. The former is a significant surgical procedure, whereas the latter are quick and inexpensive services. So Planned Parenthood’s use of “services” as its yardstick likely decreases abortion’s prominence compared to what other measurements would show. Using dollars spent or hours devoted to patient care would likely put abortion above 3 percent in the calculations.

So LifeNews wants to use dollars and PP wants to use procedures. My guess is neither is being honest.

But, let’s take this a step further. You all are all for “pulling yourself up by your bootstraps” and taking “responsibility” and “taking care of yourself, not being on the government dole,” right?

So (as previous generations of Republicans — did you know Goldwater supported choice and his wife help found a Planned Parenthood clinic in AZ?) considering all this, which is the more responsible thing for a woman to do? Have a child she cannot afford to care for — or because her circumstances — drug addition, domestic violence, etc. would not be best for the child — or, heaven forbid, she be a SINGLE parent!! — or abort.

And for all of your “freedom” screeches — what right do you have to decide what is best of another without even KNOWING them or their circumstances? If that’s the case, then I think it best you should have a vasectomy or a hysterectomy. If you get to choose for someone else, they they should have the right to choose your fate.

  11. Carol says:

You’re BOTH missing the point. ABORTION IS LEGAL. Please do me the courtesy of reading my entire post.

You likely don’t remember the horror stories of hundreds of thousands of “illegal abortions” before Roe…gruesome and deadly. I have a friend who to this day WISHES she’d had the choice to have an abortion in her teenage years after having been overcome by a man older and stronger than she, rather than suffer giving up her baby at birth to strangers as her parents demanded. Women mourn their “lost” children no matter whether it’s a stillborn, an elective abortion or a disabled child who comes instead of the “perfect” child they anticipate.

My daughter was born with a lifelong, pervasive and challenging disability. Had I known that was the case early in my pregnancy, if there was a test that could determine Autism like the one that detects Downs Syndrome, I would have been grateful to have the CHOICE whether or not to carry to term. Many families struggle and many fail over the stress of raising a disabled child. To this day, I cannot say what my decision would have been, but the CHOICE might have changed my life, whichever path I had chosen.

Don’t mistake my words…my daughter has been one of my life’s most remarkable challenges and I’m proud of what we’ve been able to accomplish together…and yet, someone will have to pay for the rest of her life when I can no longer be her NUMBER ONE PERSON ….that means somewhere around 20 years of care at what TODAY costs about $90,000 (a sum I can’t even IMAGINE being wealthy enough to afford) and it causes me tremendous pain and insecurity about her future. NO ONE will be able to replace ME for her (that’s a statement of FACT, not ego)…will she be treated with respect and dignity? Will she be encouraged to do ALL that she’s capable of or will some staff treat her as dependent, incapable out of their impatience? WILL HER NEEDS AND DESIRES BE MET or will she lead a depressed and lonely existence, withdrawing back into herself and her self-stimulatory behaviors…WILL SHE BE ABUSED?

WOMEN have SEX. You can feel indignant about that but it’s the TRUTH. No amount of ABSTINENCE ONLY education will change that.
(I’m sure you can produce a “study” that disproves that FACT….)

Perhaps you missed E A’s point…contraception is the best preventative so why the fight against birth control?
It’s an issue of CONTROL…man’s control over woman. I continue to demand that WOMEN have the right to have the last word when it comes to THEIR bodies and THEIR health. Why would I want a MAN or anyone else to do that for me?

And, red…why do you want to come down on the side of TAKING AWAY women’s rights?
Your name says “girl” so I assume you will be a WOMAN one day.
If you don’t agree with the right to have an abortion, DON’T HAVE ONE, but don’t impose your morality or what seems right for YOU on ME. I’m a thoughtful, deliberate, rational adult quite capable of making my own decisions and stand willing to live with the consequences.

I urge you to consider the following:

NO WOMAN HAS AN ABORTION IN THE MORNING AND GOES OUT DANCING THAT EVENING.

It’s a difficult and painful decision…unless you believe the clap-trap about it being “easy” and that the only women doing it are “loose and immoral”. Read the stories of family struggles over the decision to “lose” a child. Then tell me you want to give up your right as a WOMAN to make your own health decisions.

  12. Sydney says:

Carol that was such a heartfelt, intelligent, common sense post, that I had to read it twice. Thank you for sharing your personal story. Bless you and your family.

  13. Marcus D. says:

If you would all stop bloviating and twisting my words you would notice that I never said I was against Planned Parenthood. My point was that PP is in the abortion business and I question whether the feds should be funding an organization that makes it so easy for women to abort. I acknowledge the fact that that PP serves a useful purpose in other areas of women’s health. Promoting the killing of babies should not be one of them.

  14. Carol says:

Sydney…thank you for your kind words. I appreciate how you “articulate” your posts too.

and Marcus…I repeat, ABORTION IS LEGAL. Why would you want to make healthcare HARDER and LESS ACCESSIBLE for WOMEN? Women aren’t on a mission to make MEN’S healthcare decisions harder or any less accessible. We don’t petition to END ALL VASECTOMIES.
If you carried a fetus to term, I’d give your opinion a measure of credibility. I understand the human urge to recreate ourselves, in both men and women but why do YOU think your part in the equation is preeminent? This should be a topic discussed between a husband and wife or a woman and her doctor.
If you don’t like abortion, argue the point with the woman you are involved with if the question ever comes up, don’t impose YOUR view of what’s RIGHT FOR YOU on me or anyone else. You have no clue about the myriad of circumstances that drive a woman to even consider losing a child. I don’t give a hoot how much of PP’s budget funds abortion if that’s what women need, although I’d rather see it go to PREVENTION…again, ABORTION IS LEGAL.
As long as we’re discussing YOUR right to prescribe OUR healthcare, it seems appropriate to ask if YOU take responsibility by protecting yourself or do you simply let the sperm fly and then condemn the woman if she dares to disagree with carrying the child?

BTW, you can ditch the rhetoric here…we are exposed to enough of it everywhere we look and it is offensive, as is the intention.

  15. Sydney says:

Marcus…..some facts….abortion is legal and the procedure should be easy to get. How would you feel if a group of religious Americans decided that getting a vasectomy is equivalent to premeditated murder, is against gods law, should be very difficult to get, and for heavens sake, someone better prove to me that not one CENT of federal money is ever spent killing those helpless little sperms. After all every sperm is sacred, Jesus told me so.
Another fact……there is not a woman in world who doesn’t suffer and second guess the decision to get an abortion. It is something that a woman will remember forever. Trust me on this….I know first hand. There is NO COMPARISION between a lump of cells that looks like a lump of cells and a full term beautiful healthy wanted newborn baby. No comparision at all Marcus.
Just a question….how would you feel if you woke up one day with several hideous tumors growing on your face, and after several days you realize they are not going away, in fact, they are spreading, getting bigger, more hideous. No they won’t kill you, but their on your face and the only treatment besides getting them removed surgically is not very effective but is very expensive. Now how would you feel if someone else, maybe a group of people said that those tumors, those lumps of cells were a gift from god, and to remove them would be against gods law, and they know….that god wouldn’t approve.
And so……….the decision for you is limited. A decision made on your behalf, by people you don’t know. And people who don’t know you.
That is an equal comparision. Lumps of cells.
How do you like your choices now Marcus.

  16. Carol says:

    Just one more IMPORTANT thing…

A couple of days ago I came across this little gem of a blog post…I consider it MUST READ for anyone who wants to broaden their views on healthcare and ABORTION in particular, no matter WHO provides the services.

Permission to Live: How I lost my fear of Universal Health Care
ayoungmomsmusings.blogspot.com/…/how-i-lost-my-fear-of-univers…Jul 9, 2012 – How I lost my fear of Universal Health Care
(until I figure out how to transfer a link here, you’ll have to google)

I won’t steal her thunder by repeating her words…better told “in person”…but I will add this disclaimer: I didn’t anticipate nor would I advocate for the personal admission she makes at the end, although it fits with my beliefs.

  17. Marcus — one more thing about the number of abortions at Planned Parenthood — do you know why most of the abortions in this country are done there? Because the GOP has made it so difficult — not to mention the dumb shit crazies who walk into churches or clinics and shoot people — for anyone but PP to do them anyplace but at PP.

Abortions were regularly performed at various clinics and doctors offices all across the country after Roe v Wade (and in some towns BEFORE Roe v Wade — if you knew the right doctor) until the RWNJs came to town.

So they have succeeded in moving them all to one service provider and now they have a just single group to attack. They may be criminally crazy, but they are not stupid.
