President Obama held a meeting with Congressional leaders to discuss tax cuts where the following little story occurred.
Mr. Obama, who did not join the Senate until 2005, reminded Mr. Boehner and the Senate Republican leader, Senator Mitch McConnell of Kentucky, that the tax cuts’ architects purposely left the deficit problem to a future administration, according to aides from both parties.
“I wasn’t there,” Mr. Boehner quickly countered. “I didn’t structure that deal.”
The room briefly went quiet as participants seemed to ponder that statement from a legislator first elected in 1990. “How long have you been here?,” a Democrat asked Mr. Boehner, and the others broke out in laughter.
It’s a telling anecdote. The White House vision is to largely follow the game plan crafted by congressional Republicans less than a decade ago. It was the GOP’s idea — they passed tax cuts, which overwhelmingly benefited the wealthy, and set the cuts to expire at the end of 2010. The point was to obscure the cuts’ cost, play a dangerous budget game, and make it so that the GOP wouldn’t have to pay for their own experiment. We saw the results, which can only fairly be described as “total failure.”
[...]
Indeed, Boehner was, at the time, responsible at the committee level for helping shape the tax-cut package, and was on hand at the White House for the bill-signing ceremony.
No wonder the room broke out in laughter.
The guy’s a cartoon and he doesn’t know it.

How many suckers do you think are going to fall for this one? My guess is a whole bunch.
Conservative talk radio host Michael Reagan, eldest son of former president Ronald Reagan, is selling @Reagan.com e-mail addresses on his website with an appeal to conservatives to stop giving their money to companies he casts as tied to liberalism.
Writes Reagan: “People who believe in true Reagan Conservative Values are unwittingly supporting the Obama, Pelosi and Reid liberal agenda! What do I mean? Well, every time you use your email from companies like Google, AOL, Yahoo, Hotmail, Apple and others, you are helping the liberals. These companies are, and will continue, to be huge supporters financially and with technology of those that are hurting our country.”
“Is that where you want your money to go? I didn’t so I changed things,” he continues. “I came up with the very first conservative email service provider. You now can put your name next to the name of the Greatest Conservative of all, my father Ronald Reagan.”
The same idiots who dished out their money to attend classes at Glenn Beck University are most surely going to spend $34.95 per year for a Reagan.com address. What better way to show what good little wingnuts they are. And all the while, opportunists like Beck and Reagan are laughing all the way to the bank at the expense of simpletons who cannot see that they are being duped by con artists.
Further fallout from crap like this is the added divisiveness it creates. Not only do you have Palin’s “real Americans” (aka conservatives) versus fake Americans (aka liberals) but now you have real American corporations versus the traitorous ones who would dare contribute money to Democrats.
Why not just start branding ‘R’ or ‘D’ on American’s foreheads and be done with it.

Is there any position held by his party that this guy will not vote against?
Sen. Ben Nelson (D-Neb.) announced his opposition Friday to the Supreme Court nomination of Elena Kagan, becoming the first Democrat to declare a ‘no’ vote on President Obama’s second nominee to the highest court in the nation.Without specifying his objections, Nelson issued a statement late Friday afternoon saying that constituents in his conservative-leaning state do not support Kagan’s confirmation. “I have heard concerns from Nebraskans regarding Ms. Kagan, and her lack of a judicial record makes it difficult for me to discount the concerns raised by Nebraskans, or to reach a level of comfort that these concerns are unfounded. Therefore, I will not vote to confirm Ms. Kagan’s nomination,” Nelson said.
Here is what Nelson said in 2005 about his intent to confirm John Roberts.
“Only time will tell where Judge Roberts will come down on the prevailing legal matters that come before the Roberts Court. I can only take him at his word that he will approach his role on the court without a pre-determined agenda, without activism, and with only the intention to balance the scales of justice for all Americans…..
I will vote to confirm Judge John Roberts as Chief Justice of the Supreme Court.”
He was willing to take Roberts “at his word” but had his doubts about Sonia Sotomayor and will not confirm Elena Kagan. Liberals could put a positive spin on this and claim that the Democratic party is broad enough that it supports a diverse array of views. The problem with that line of thinking is that we’re talking about Ben ‘Cornhusker Kickback” Nelson here. Nelson’s game is to extract as much leverage as he can from his party to satisfy his own self-serving needs.
After opposing the public health plan and extending benefits to the unemployed, stalling financial reform and rejecting his own party’s Supreme Court nomination, at what point does one cease to be referred to as a Democrat?

Anthony Weiner on Hardball referring to Dems doing battle with Republicans.
“Democrats bring library books to knife fights.”
True. It would be nice if both sides would show up with library books but unfortunately, one side has chosen to remain illiterate. The dilemma for Dems is that one faction of the party is screaming for them to drop the books and start packing knives or risk getting bloodied time and time again. Another faction demands that they stay true to character and double the number of books they bring to these fights with no thought of resorting to their opponent’s tactics.
I’d like to think the answer lies somewhere between those two extremes. Definitely keep on carrying those books but don’t be afraid to flash a knife or two when the situation calls for it. Being ‘right’ is important but it won’t win you any battles when faced with an opponent who fights by a unique set of rules where integrity and truth have no place…an opponent who understands only too well that half the jury who gets to pick the winner is as illiterate as they are.
The proper balance of “books” and street smarts is what’s called for, I think.
