Bachmann and Palin move over. Sharron Angle has arrived to snatch that Wingnut Loon award both of you have been battling over for so long now. Following her comments on rape (it’s all part of God’s plan) she follows up with this.
“The tenet of the separation of church and state is an unconstitutional doctrine,” [Angle] said.
“The separation of church and state arises out of the Constitution,” Ralston replied.
“No it doesn’t, Jon,” Angle said. “Thomas Jefferson was actually addressing a church and telling them through his address that there had been a wall of separation put up to protect the church from being taken over by a state religion, and that’s what they meant. They didn’t think they couldn’t bring their values to the political forum, and it didn’t mean that people with religious beliefs shouldn’t have that freedom.”
Harry Reid is having a field day with this latest crazy talk from Angle. Someone is going to have to find a copy of the Constitution for her to read. And while they’re at it, a muzzle that fits her would not be a bad idea if she’s to have any chance of winning in Nevada.

It’s getting harder and harder for most Americans, looking honestly at the state of the nation, to see the glass as half full. And that’s why the public opinion polls contain nothing but bad news for Barack Obama and the Democrats.
The oil gushing into the Gulf of Mexico, the war in Afghanistan and, above all, the continuing epidemic of joblessness have pushed the nation into a funk. All the crowing in the world about the administration’s legislative accomplishments — last year’s stimulus package, this year’s health care reform, etc. — is not enough to lift the gloom.
Mr. Obama and the Democrats have wasted the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity handed to them in the 2008 election. They did not focus on jobs, jobs, jobs as their primary mission, and they did not call on Americans to join in a bold national effort (which would have required a great deal of shared sacrifice) to solve a wide range of very serious problems, from our over-reliance on fossil fuels to the sorry state of public education to the need to rebuild the nation’s rotting infrastructure.
[W]ill the gods of history spit Obama out for being lukewarm? While thoughtful progressives like Drum mourn his lack of Rooseveltian fire, the Limbaugh-led Republican leadership and rank and file insist with one voice that he’s the second coming of Stalin, inflicting socialism on a proud unwilling country of rugged individualists. Karl Rove crows that the country is rejecting his statist power grab, and the more moderate Clive Crook asserts that he’s blown his mandate by governing from the left rather than the center. Could it be that he’s moving the country left about as fast and far as it can bear? Maybe it’s selection bias on my part, a comforting personal myth, but I recur repeatedly — hopefully (ad nauseum?)– to Frederick Douglass’ 1876 assessment of Lincoln:
Viewed from the genuine abolition ground, Mr. Lincoln seemed tardy, cold, dull, and indifferent; but measuring him by the sentiment of his country, a sentiment he was bound as a statesman to consult, he was swift, zealous, radical, and determined.
The question becomes how to get the ‘A’ crowd into ‘B’ thinking mode.

Let me see if I have this straight: in the last few days members of the GOP have savagely screwed the unemployed, protected the bankstas, trashed Thurgood Marshall, implied rape and incest is part of God’s plan, defended BP, threatened to either end social security or screw over 20 million plus people who have paid into the system for at least 20 years by making them wait until age 70 to see their benefits, and screwed homeless veterans with children. That about it, or is there more?
It’s sort of frightening when you see it all bunched up like that, isn’t it? And it’s not made up. This is who these people are brought to you in their very own words.
Tell me, could al Qaeda ever dream of doing more long term damage to America than the proposed actions of the Republican party? I don’t think so.

Unfortunately for Americans, it’s conservatives on the other side of the pond who finally get it.
Gay celebrities and members of the Armed Forces partied at Number 10 as Mr Cameron became the first Tory Prime Minister to reach out to the gay community.
Gay representatives of all three branches of the Armed Forces also attended, in full uniform. The event was designed to help reposition the new Government as a champion of equality after decades in which the Conservatives have been accused of anti-gay prejudice.
Mr Cameron told guests that he backed ‘equal rights and equal treatment’, adding: ‘I’m standing here as leader of the Conservative Party that has not always got that right.’
The event was held as the Government unveiled a ‘Transgender Action Plan’ to crack down on discrimination against lesbians, gays, bisexuals and transsexuals.
Don’t hold your breath waiting for conservatives in this country to follow suit. They’re still stuck with a religious mindset that speaks of intolerance and hypocrisy over acceptance and understanding. And it is that intolerance which breeds hate and violence towards a segment of humanity who are guilty of no crime other than being who they are.
Guest Antony Cotton, who plays gay character Sean Tully in Coronation Street, was there as an ambassador of The Albert Kennedy Trust, which helps homeless gay teenagers.
He said: ‘It was set up after a young boy died in Manchester.
‘He was homeless and was being chased by what you would now call homophobic bullies and he was chased to the top of a car park and jumped off.
‘The trust helps young people all over the country who are homeless after coming out.’
As for Democrats, are you listening? Enough with the half-measures, delays and posturing. Enough with letting fear of the political consequences dictate what you do and when you do it. In matters of civil rights and equality, there is only one perfect time to get it done. Now.
