Republicans – Out Of Step On DADT

.

Polls indicate that upwards of 80% of Americans are in favor of repealing Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell.  Rep. Mike Spence summed up Republican opposition to the House amendemnt repealing DADT with this bit of idiocy:

“the American people don’t want the American military to be used to advance a liberal political agenda.”

These jackasses consider allowing gays equal rights as nothing more than an advancement of “a liberal political agenda”.  Some Republicans do get it though.  Former Bush adviser Matthew Dowd:

“They socialize with kids that are openly gay and all of the sudden they go in the armed services, somebody gives them a rifle and they’re not supposed to be around gay people anymore?”

It doesn’t make any sense. It’s long been decided in the public’s mind. I think the Republicans are so far out of step about this, where the country is…Republican office holders are so far out of step with this.

George Will on Republicans in Congress:

“They’re not being very intelligent.”

There’s an understatement for you but what more would you expect from a party that operates as if bigotry is official party policy.

Making A Killing From The Gulf Oil Disaster

.

There’s something about this that isn’t right.

Transocean Ltd.,  the owner of the rig leased by BP which is currently leaking oil into the Gulf of Mexico, made a $270 million profit from insurance payouts after the disaster, the Sunday Times reports.

The amount, revealed during a conference call to analysts, was made because its insurance policy for Deepwater Horizon rig was greater than the value of the rig itself, the paper reports.

Transocean said the cost of the cleanup from the leaking rig must be covered by BP and two smaller partners, Anadarko Petroleum and Mitsui of Japan, the paper says.

And Transocean shareholders picked up $1 billion in dividends as the company tried to hold it’s liability to under $27 million.  All of this while millions of gallons of crude poured into the Gulf.

Life is good for some.

Why Do Republicans Hate Infants?

.

These people are disgusting.

Despite pleas by children’s advocates and testimony that babies will die, Republicans on the state Senate Finance Committee stripped funding for an infant-death reduction initiative that officials say is reducing Memphis and Tennessee’s high rates of infant mortality.

The committee voted 7-4, on straight party lines Thursday night to reject an effort by Senate Democratic Leader Jim Kyle of Memphis and others to restore the state budget funding for the governor’s Office of Children’s Care Coordination and the grants it administers across Tennessee.

Republicans hold a 19-14 Senate majority, and the budget alternative they first unveiled May 11 has called for cutting the program’s $4.6 million budget in half for the fiscal year that starts July 1, then eliminating it entirely the following year.

If you’re wondering why Republicans would appear to not care about saving infant lives, here’s a clue.

Deborah Clubb, executive director of the Memphis Area Women’s Council, said the committee’s vote “will shut down all of the effort that began five years ago … to address the horrific rate of dying babies in Shelby County.”

“It’s bizarre that fish hatcheries in East Tennessee stand a better chance of being funded than programs that directly impact our infant mortality rate, saving African-American babies, through funding by the Governor’s Office of Children’s Care Coordination,” Clubb said.

“African-American babies are dying at three times the rate of Caucasian babies.”

These hypocrites are the same scum who scream and yell about the sanctity of life when it comes to embryos but have no problem withholding funding for a program with a proven track record in saving infant lives.  They had no problem doing all they could to block health insurance reform even with the knowledge that the broken system kills one American every 12 minutes of every day of every week of every month of every year.  They don’t care.  They really don’t.  It appears that if an initiative is not beneficial to big business or rich then it doesn’t hold much interest for Republicans.

Whether one is a conservative or liberal, this story should bother you.  And if it doesn’t, then please explain how the actions of these Republican politicians are not tantamount to murder?

Obama – Withholding Inspiration

.

Maureen Dowd picks up on a theme I wrote of a few days ago.

President Spock’s behavior is illogical.

Once more, he has willfully and inexplicably resisted fulfilling a signal part of his job: being a prism in moments of fear and pride, reflecting what Americans feel so they know he gets it.

[...]

In the campaign, Obama’s fight flagged to the point that his donors openly upbraided him. In the Oval, he waited too long to express outrage and offer leadership on A.I.G., the banks, the bonuses, the job loss and mortgage fears, the Christmas underwear bomber, the death panel scare tactics, the ugly name-calling of Tea Party protesters.

Too often it feels as though Barry is watching from a balcony, reluctant to enter the fray until the clamor of the crowd forces him to come down. The pattern is perverse. The man whose presidency is rooted in his ability to inspire withholds that inspiration when it is most needed.

Oblivious to warnings about Osama hitting the U.S. and Katrina hitting New Orleans, W. often seemed more absorbed in workouts than work. Obama, by contrast, does his homework; he conveys a rare and impressive grasp of difficult subjects when he at last deigns to talk to the news media and reassure those whose lives are overturned by disaster.

The wound-tight, travel-light Obama has a distaste for the adversarial and the random. But if you stick too rigidly to a No Drama rule in the White House, you risk keeping reality at bay. Presidencies are always about crisis management.

Again, it’s not about the President’s understanding or honest concern about the issue at hand.  Both of those are real.  It’s about conveying that honest concern to the masses who need reassurance in a place where cold, cool logic does not always register.  In their hearts.
