Reefer Madness

.

Here’s an interesting new trend.

Long a fixture among young people, use of the country’s most popular illicit drug is now growing among the AARP set, as the massive generation of baby boomers who came of age in the 1960s and ’70s grows older.

The number of people aged 50 and older reporting marijuana use in the prior year went up from 1.9 percent to 2.9 percent from 2002 to 2008, according to surveys from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration.

The rise was most dramatic among 55- to 59-year-olds, whose reported marijuana use more than tripled from 1.6 percent in 2002 to 5.1 percent.

The drug is credited with relieving many problems of aging: aches and pains, glaucoma, macular degeneration, and so on. Patients in 14 states enjoy medical marijuana laws, but those elsewhere buy or grow the drug illegally to ease their conditions.

The days when pot was viewed as a “violent narcotic”, an “unspeakable scourge” and a road to “incurable insanity” are long gone but the stigma associated with the drug no doubt remains.  I suspect that for some, this clip from the 1930s propaganda film Reefer Madness, is reality.

There Is No Pleasing Wingnuts

.

It’s getting all so dumb. Republicans are now down to criticizing the length of the President’s health care proposal. From John Boehner’s office comes this nonsense

“The White House’s ‘plan’ consists of an 11-page outline, which has not been scored by the Congressional Budget Office or posted online as legislative text. So they want to reorganize one-sixth of the United States’ economy with a document shorter than a comic book…”

Previously, Boehner has had this to say

“The best way to get a sense of what Speaker Pelosi’s takeover of health care looks like is to actually look at it. Just shy of 2,000 pages, it runs more than 620 pages longer than the government-run plan Hillary Clinton proposed in 1993.”

[The bill is] “1,990 pages of bureaucracy.”

Of course the White House plan is essentially the Senate health care proposal along with some modifications outlined in the 11 pages they released yesterday.  Boehner knows this but why let the truth get in the way of a good soundbite.  Can these people be any more transparent?

Schwarzenegger Battles Conservative ‘Truth Be Damned’ Philosophy

.

California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger will be the next Republican to have his name trashed by conservatives. How dare he speak the truth!

“I think the stimulus package has been very successful so far and I think California has benefitted tremendously.”

And on health care…

“I think any Republican that says you should start from scratch, I think that’s bogus talk, and that’s partisan talk.”

Arnold, please deposit your Republican membership card at the nearest GOP office.  I hope I’m not wrong but I don’t see Schwarzenegger bowing down to Limbaugh who has been successful in getting every other conservative who had the audacity to speak the truth cower before his wrath.

Schwarzenegger has shown himself to be a solid conservative in most respects but there is no place in the Republican party for anyone who dares go against the current conservative game plan of bashing anything Obama.

Republicans – Party of the Rich

.

Money’s tight. Economy sucks. What to do?  Missouri’s got it figured out.

Cash-strapped legislators have recommended spending cuts for Missouri schools and shelters for battered women, but so far the yachting class can enjoy another season of clear sailing.

Thanks to a longstanding tax exemption, Missouri’s marina set can opt to pay a small fee in lieu of sales taxes and shave as much as $30,000 off the purchase of a $500,000 boat.

That tax exemption alone is depriving state and local coffers of more than $6 million a year, according to some estimates. It’s just one of more than 130 untaxed transactions that are getting renewed attention in Jefferson City because of the state’s continuing budget crisis.

Just further proof of Republican’s total disregard for anyone but the rich.  What a screwed up, conscienceless party of scum.
