It’s underway. We’ve heard from Obama and Republican Senator Lamar Alexander. This is not going to work.
Updates throughout the day…
* Repub Tom Coburn is trying to make the case that the fix to bring down health care costs is to stop fraud in the system. He claims it would reduce costs by 15%.
* Republicans opening strategy was to try to have the President remove reconciliation as an option. Harry Reid killed that idea reminding repubs that it has been used numerous times in the past…mostly by republicans. Hypocrites.
* After criticizing the White House proposal, Alexander was asked by Obama what he liked in the WH outline. Alexander immediately changed the subject and went off on some tangent about process. Ha!
* Republicans are singing a single tune: “scrap the bill and start from scratch so we could stall it for another three years.”
* Obama was hoping the summit would not be “political theater”. Republicans are making sure it is.
* With Republican behavior at the summit, it’s clearer than ever. Reconciliation is the only answer. Give the people what they want and screw Republican obstructionism.
* 4 hours into the summit and Republicans are still stuck on “let’s scrap the bills in Congress and start from scratch”. It’s going nowhere.
* Here’s the McCain exchange. Sad. .
.
* Ezra Klein on Twitter…
“Being president is a helluva home field advantage”
* Obama is displaying an amazing amount of patience with these shitheads. John Boehner just wrapped up his little spiel about scrapping the bill and tax-funded abortion. The President looked like he wanted to punch him out.

Florida’s Republican senatorial candidate Marco Rubio, darling of conservatives and teabaggers everywhere, is in trouble.
U.S. Senate candidate Marco Rubio charged grocery bills, repairs to the family minivan and purchases from a wine store less than a mile from his West Miami home to the Republican Party of Florida while he was speaker of the Florida House, according to records obtained by The Miami Herald/St. Petersburg Times.
Records show Rubio sent payments to American Express totaling $13,900 for his personal expenses during his tenure as House speaker. But those payments were not made monthly. He made no contributions to the bill during a six-month stretch in 2007, records show.
Charges covered by the party as political expenses include:
• $765 at Apple’s online store for “computer supplies.”
• $25.76 from Everglades Lumber for “supplies.”
• $53.49 at Winn-Dixie in Miami for “food.”
• $68.33 at Happy Wine in Miami for “beverages” and “meal.”
• $78.10 for two purchases at Farm Stores in suburban Miami.
• $412 at All Fusion Electronics, a music equipment store in Miami, for “supplies.”
Rubio’s reaction to the revelation? Indignation, lies and anger. How dare his Republican opponent, Charlie Crist, make public records showing Rubio to be just another crooked politician .
Indignation…
“It is clear these internal documents were taken from the RPOF by former chairman Jim Greer or someone working for him and were leaked to the media by the Crist campaign,” Rubio’s letter said. “These actions are an appalling act of political desperation.”
and lies…
“I always took it upon myself to identify and directly pay American Express for all non-official expenses.”
What is appalling about revealing that one’s political opponent is a lying thief? Is this not something the public would want to know? I would hope so.
Conservatives will no doubt sweep this under the rug and hope it just goes away. In short; politics as usual.

The United States has unveiled plans for its new $1 billion high-security embassy in London — the most expensive it has ever built.
The proposals were met with relief from both the present embassy’s Mayfair neighbours and the residents and developers of the Battersea wasteland where the vast crystalline cube, surrounded by a moat, will be built.
A moat 30 metres (100ft) wide and rolling parkland will separate the building from the main road, protecting it from would-be bombers and removing the need for the blast barriers that so dismayed the people of Mayfair.
No architectural background is necessary to be able to say with total confidence that the design is horribly grotesque. Ugly even. And I’m not alone in feeling that way…
the new US Embassy in London is intended to be “a 12-storey cube clad in a blastproof glass and plastic façade” surrounded by a 30-metre blast zone. In the proof image above, it looks not unlike a high-end bunker has been simply dropped from space on London, an impregnable and isolated chunk of America. And while security is an obvious and present concern, I think perhaps this building says a little more than it was intended to.
In fact, let’s admit it. IT’S A FORTRESS WITH A FUCKING MOAT. It doesn’t say “welcome to a little piece of America, one of the best ideas the world ever had and a country that welcomes the tired and poor and afraid.” It says “if you even look at us funny we’ll pour boiling oil on you from the roof. Raise the drawbridge! Release the Mongolian Terror Trout!”
It’s pretty funny, really.
“Mongolian Terror Trout“…I love it!

In a recent interview with Newsmax, [Jeb] Bush was asked whether he thought Palin was a viable candidate for president. Though he had some nice things to say about her “charisma,” it was clear that Bush thinks Palin doesn’t have the intellectual heft to occupy the oval office. He said that Palin’s success depends on her willingness to add a “depth of understanding of the complexity of life we’re living in today” to her rhetoric.
“That’s up to her,” he said. “I mean, I don’t know what her deal is, but my belief is in 2010 and 2012, public leaders need to have intellectual curiosity.”
Ok, two things. First of all, Bush is right. He recognizes Palin for what she is – an empty-headed opportunist who appeals only to weak-minded conservatives. That’s an easy one. As a thinking conservative, Jeb understands that a Sarah Palin would have zero chance of winning a presidential election against Obama…or for that matter, against Goofy.
But here’s the bigger question. What does Jeb think of brother George who he helped put into office by stealing the Florida election in 2000? By what criteria could he claim that George W. was any more intellectually curious than Palin? I’m not sure what the order would be but in any ranking of shallow, know-nothing politicians, Palin and Bush would take the top two spots.
And in any ranking of hypocritical politicians, Jeb Bush would be tied for top spot along with most members of Congress – Democrat and Republican.
