Obama – “Just Give Me The Ball

.

Ezra Klein on the significance of tonight’s State of the Union…

Tonight’s speech is the most important of his young presidency, and it will be the most revealing of his career. Does he stand and fight for a health-care bill he believes to be a historic and necessary step forward? Or does he back away from it, letting some gestures toward his commitment to the issue stand in for the determined leadership — and the political gamble — that would represent real commitment to the issue?

During the campaign, Obama famously told Patrick Gaspard, his political director, “just give me the ball.” Today, Obama is the president of the United States. He’s got a lot of people screaming at him and cheering for him, and almost as many shouting advice. But he’s the guy with the ball. The question is what he does with it.

Teabaggers Upset With Palin

.

Wingnuts are unhappy with Palin.

…when Palin announced last week that she would campaign for McCain in his reelection primary battle against ultra-conservative former congressman J.D. Hayworth, some of her most vocal supporters were outraged that she would endorse McCain, who they see as a Republican in Name Only (RINO).

Fox News contributor Michelle Malkin wrote on her blog that “Tea Party activists are rightly outraged by Sarah Palin’s decision to campaign for McCain, whose entrenched incumbency and progressive views are anathema to the movement.”

On his radio show yesterday, Fox News host Glenn Beck told a caller upset by Palin’s move that “This Sarah Palin thing really bothers me.” “I am absolutely no fan of John McCain,” Beck said. “I want to have another sit down with her. How does she believe he is a good man when everyone in his organization trashed her?”

People just don’t seem to get Palin.  They’re failing to understand that she has no convictions. She’s not really interested in much of anything except promoting the Palin Corporation. Health care, the environment, fiscal policies, terrorism, foreign policy, bank bailouts, John McCain, teabaggers, conservatism…if anyone believes that Palin spends any serious time pondering any of these, they’re either delusional or just haven’t been paying attention.

She doesn’t care. She has no real knowledge or understanding of any of the major issues and that is plenty fine with her.  What she does understand is that there are enough simpletons out there to keep her gig at Fox going, to buy her books and to pay out $250 to hear her blabber on matters she is clueless about. And in the shallow world of Sarah Palin, that is all that truly matters.

Gays In The Military – Time For Obama To Act

.

There is no exact way of determining how many gays, lesbians and bisexuals serving in the U.S. military since there is no actual tracking of the numbers…but here is one estimate.

An estimated 66,000 gay, lesbian and bisexual people are serving in the U.S. military, roughly 2 percent of all military personnel, according to a report released Tuesday by a gay rights policy center. The figures suggest a slight increase in the number of gays, lesbians and bisexuals in the military, and they provide opponents of the military’s “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy with fresh data as they lobby the Obama administration for its repeal.

Gays, lesbians and bisexuals account for about 13,000 active duty service members, equal to less than 1 percent currently deployed, the report estimated. About 53,000 others serve in the National Guard and reserves, equaling about 3.4 percent.

While one may try to make the argument that Obama has yet to act on his campaign promise to repeal Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell because of the rocky political climate, it is a dubious one at best. The longer he waits, the more difficult it will be to end this homophobic practice. Conservatives have been successful in poisoning the debate on every issue confronting the nation and they will do the same with this one regardless of when the President decides to act.  There will never be the perfect time to do the right thing.

Obama made a promise. It is time he kept it.

Banning Marxist Bears In Schools (or something like that)

.

Idiots everywhere.

What do the authors of the children’s book Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See? and a 2008 book called Ethical Marxism: The Categorical Imperative of Liberation have in common?

Both are named Bill Martin and, for now, neither is being added to Texas schoolbooks.

In its haste to sort out the state’s social studies curriculum standards this month, the State Board of Education tossed children’s author Martin, who died in 2004, from a proposal for the third-grade section. Board member Pat Hardy, R-Weatherford, who made the motion, cited books he had written for adults that contain “very strong critiques of capitalism and the American system.”

Trouble is, the Bill Martin Jr. who wrote the Brown Bear series never wrote anything political, unless you count a book that taught kids how to say the Pledge of Allegiance, his friends said. The book on Marxism was written by Bill Martin, a philosophy professor at DePaul University in Chicago.

The bigger problem here is less the mixup (no one bothered to perform a simple Google check) than the fact that educators think it a good idea to ban a book on Marxism. Should education not be about exposing students to ideas or should young people learn about Marxism from watching Glenn Beck’s hour of nonsense? I write that facetiously but I’d bet you that the people on the Texas Board of Education who banned the book would be thrilled if an hour of Beck was required viewing for all of its students.

As I said, idiots everywhere.
