“This is a brilliant speech. Realistically won’t do any good unless senate centrists grow consciences, unemployment falls.” Matt Yglesias on Twitter
For all of his good intentions, Obama cannot do it alone. If centrists in Congress persist in focusing on the November midterms instead of what’s right for the country, then all the good intentions in the world won’t do a damn thing.

It’s clear enough that no matter what the President does or does not do, the right will never be satisfied. Here’s a snippet of Erick Erickson’s post speech analysis. He first quotes Obama.
“Because of the steps we took, there are about two million Americans working right now who would otherwise be unemployed. 200,000 work in construction and clean energy. 300,000 are teachers and other education workers. Tens of thousands are cops, firefighters, correctional officers, and first responders. And we are on track to add another one and a half million jobs to this total by the end of the year.”
And what is wrong with any of that? It’s good news, right? Apparently not. Erickson explains.
Review the list. Every job listed is either a government job or a job so connected to government that it would not exist but for government. The clean energy industry? It would not exist, but for government subsidy. Construction? He is talking about roads and other infrastructure — jobs that will go away once the project is done and the whole way through is dependent on the government.
All of these are government jobs.
What? Two million jobs would not have been there if not for the stimulus package and this hack thinks it’s inadequate because, in part, construction jobs “will go away once the project is done.”
Sheesh. I imagine that it is irrelevant to this wingnut that the construction worker is now able to pay off his mortgage and credit cards, buy food and goods and generally provide for his or her family. All this while helping to rebuild a crumbling infrastructure.
Seriously, what is the point of trying to discuss anything with these dickheads? It’s all so futile. This brand of conservatism is a mental disorder. I’m convinced.

“To Democrats, I would remind you that we still have the largest majority in decades, and the people expect us to solve some problems, not run for the hills.”
“And if the Republican leadership is going to insist that sixty votes in the Senate are required to do any business at all in this town, then the responsibility to govern is now yours as well. Just saying no to everything may be good short-term politics, but it’s not leadership. We were sent here to serve our citizens, not our ambitions.”
I knew President Obama and his staff read my blog. After writing this afternoon on the need for the President to repeal ‘Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell’, this story just showed up in the Washington Post.
President Obama will call for a repeal of the military’s “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy during Wednesday night’s State of the Union address, White House officials said Wednesday afternoon.
The policy forbids openly gay and lesbian people from serving in the military, and requires their discharge should they tell fellow servicemembers about their sexuality.
“Don’t ask, don’t tell” was signed into law by President Bill Clinton in 1993, as part of the National Defense Authorization Act. It was intended as a compromise between the military’s desire to continue banning gays from its ranks and Clinton’s campaign promise to allow gays serving in the military to be open about their sexual orientation. The law forbade the latter but it also blocked military commanders from asking about a subordinate’s sexuality.
Gay rights groups have fought ever since to repeal the policy, and Clinton has since said that he now supports lifting the restrictions. Obama vowed during his own campaign to end “don’t ask, don’t tell,” a position he reiterated last October in a speech to the Human Rights campaign, a prominent gay rights group.
Good stuff.

Nothing Glenn Becks says should be shocking these days…and it’s not. The man is a great self promoter and entertainer. Yet, he does need to be called out for his buffoonery from time to time if for no other reason than the fact that many of his intellectually-challenged audience actually believe this guy.
His latest lunacy was to show us all how President Obama is charting a course not unlike that of Venezuela’s dictator and resident crazy-man Hugo Chavez. Crooks and Liars had this to say…
No, really.
Because Obama’s history is just like Chavez’s:
– Chavez first attempted to come to power through a military coup.
– Shortly after his election, he called for a constitutional convention that rewrote the Venezuelan Constitution.
– He survived a short-lived coup in 2002.
– He has called for an end to presidential term limits.
– He has shut down opposition press organs.
Amazing similarities.
