The neighbors couldn’t help but notice the huge head of Pope John Paul II rising out of the sculptor’s workshop next door.
Hidden behind the walls, the pope’s left hand gripped Jesus on the cross while his right extended outward, an imitation of the gesture he had made during his visit to Santiago two decades earlier.
But this was no private religious homage — it was the makings of a 40-foot-tall bronze statue meant to tower over a bohemian neighborhood in this capital city.
[...]
The $734,000 project involves wiping out the park and its trees to build an underground parking lot, relocating a craft fair that has been there for 20 years and installing a giant pope.
The public outcry was quick: the dean and students at the University of Chile, neighborhood organizations, architects, academics and even priests have spoken out against it; newspapers have been bombarded by letters and columns against what one paper calls the “Popesaurus”
The statue was conceived by the privately owned San Sebastian University, which is headed by members of the right-wing, ultraconservative party UDI.
Popesaurus. I like that.
Just for the heck of it, someone should propose a 40 foot statue of Barack Obama to be built in Washington. I’d love to see the number of conservative heads exploding like firecrackers. Could you imagine the reaction from Glenn Beck? How much fun would that be?

Fox is going absolutely crazy with what they perceive as the White House picking a battle with them. MediaMatters turns it right around and points out that it is in fact Fox who has picked a fight with this White House…and they’ve been doing it consistently for nine months.
And just in case you’re intelligent enough to not make Fox your source for news and missed it… .
.
MediaMatters does a wonderful job of unmasking the lies emanating from the right. Wingnut media types hate them because MM exposes them for what they are – fat-cat, lying scum mostly. As for conservatives who rely on Fox and Limbaugh for their news, their dislike for MM stems from the simple fact that they just don’t know better.

Who are Republicans listening to when it comes to health care reform? The people or health insurance lobbyists?
Steve Champlin, a health insurance lobbyists urges Republicans to block health care reform.
“There is absolutely no interest, no reason Republicans should ever vote for this thing. They have gone from a party that got killed 11 months ago to a party that is rising today. And they are rising up on the turmoil of health care. So when they vote for a health care reform bill, whatever it is, they are giving comfort to the enemy who is down.”
“Long before the Republicans discovered that the House bill was a strategy to kill seniors and all that kind of stuff the plan was already unpopular.”
Did you get that part about the GOP “rising up on the turmoil of health care”? Aside from the fact that the Republican party is not rising (only 20% of the population consider themselves Repubs), trying to defeat the President by obstructing health care reform has been the plan from day one. Can it be any clearer? Will the saps who are buying into this ruse ever learn?

Another horror story from a broken, corrupted health care system.
Christina Turner feared that she might have been sexually assaulted after two men slipped her a knockout drug. She thought she was taking proper precautions when her doctor prescribed a month’s worth of anti-AIDS medicine.
Only later did she learn that she had made herself all but uninsurable.
Turner had let the men buy her drinks at a bar in Fort Lauderdale. The next thing she knew, she said, she was lying on a roadside with cuts and bruises that indicated she had been raped. She never developed an HIV infection. But months later, when she lost her health insurance and sought new coverage, she ran into a problem.
Turner, 45, who used to be a health insurance underwriter herself, said the insurance companies examined her health records. Even after she explained the assault, the insurers would not sell her a policy because the HIV medication raised too many health questions. They told her they might reconsider in three or more years if she could prove that she was still AIDS-free.
Let’s hear again from conservatives about it being the greatest health care system in the world.

Terribly busy day yesterday. I ended up missing much of what transpired in the news after 1 PM so I might do a bit of catching up today and comment on day old stories, like Pat Buchanan’s racist rant in what is probably the most ridiculous right-wing website out there – WorldNutDaily. Buchanan’s article title, “Traditional Americans are losing their nation“, is a dead giveaway that cable’s number one defender of white guy’s rights, still isn’t getting it.
In their lifetimes, they have seen their Christian faith purged from schools their taxes paid for, and mocked in movies and on TV. They have seen their factories shuttered in the thousands and their jobs outsourced in the millions to Mexico and China. They have seen trillions of tax dollars go for Great Society programs, but have seen no Great Society, only rising crime, illegitimacy, drug use and dropout rates.
They watch on cable TV as illegal aliens walk into their country, are rewarded with free educations and health care and take jobs at lower pay than American families can live on – then carry Mexican flags in American cities and demand U.S. citizenship.
They see Wall Street banks bailed out as they sweat their next paycheck, then read that bank profits are soaring, and the big bonuses for the brilliant bankers are back. Neither they nor their kids ever benefited from affirmative action, unlike Barack and Michelle Obama.
They see a government in Washington that cannot balance its books, win our wars or protect our borders. The government shovels out trillions to Fortune 500 corporations and banks to rescue the country from a crisis created by the government and Fortune 500 corporations and banks.
Hmmm. Lot’s of crap there to sift through. Buchanan’s rant comes in defense of “truthers,” “birthers,” tea party activists” and “town-hall dissenters” and “Oath Keepers.” Buchanan tells us they’re angry people, all of them, and in his view, they’re quite justified. After all, “neither they nor their kids ever benefited from affirmative action, unlike Barack and Michelle Obama.” That’s about as ignorant as it gets. From the racist’s perspective, Obama’s success cannot in some way be attributed to his intelligence, focus and hard work. Nope, it’s all about Obama being black and getting an unfair advantage over…yep, the white guy.
It’s typical “we” (aka ‘white people’, mostly male no doubt) versus “they” (African Americans, Hispanics, non-Christians and anyone else who does not fit into Buchanan’s lily-white Christian world.
And the result of all this, Buchanan tells us, is that…
America was once their country. They sense they are losing it. And they are right.
No, it’s not that they’re losing their country. It’s that they are locked into a 1950s mindset which stunts their understanding of how societies function. Great nations and people evolve within a framework of just laws and just societies. When one is unable to view their world from beyond the narrow confines of “me”, then what you get is a pundit who writes an article titled “Traditional Americans are losing their nation” where traditional carries a single meaning: everyone who is exactly like me.
