On Limes and Orgasms…

Moment of Zen http://mariopiperni.com/

.

Sorry, but this is actually a private Zen moment. There’s a joint down here in Miami called The Key Lime Factory. They’ve been around for something like 17,000 years. Well, I’ve just sampled a slice of their Key Lime pie. Unbelievable!

How good is it? Well, imagine your top orgasmic moment. Now multiply it by a factor of 100…and you’d be close to knowing how good this slice of heaven tastes.

Thought I’d share that with you. Open thread.

Glenn Beck’s Clarity of Thought (/sarcasm)

quoteoftheday-idiot1

.

Glenn Beck with Katie Couric on Hillary Clinton and his voting preference…

“I can’t believe I’m saying this but I think I would have much preferred her as President, and may have voted for her against John McCain.”

“I think John McCain would have been worse for the country than Barack Obama. How’s that?”

Sure Glenn. Here’s a guy trying to give the impression that he’s balanced and rational in his thinking by making a statement which he’ll never have to back up or prove.

What a clown.

Conservative vs. Conservative – Part II

Conservatism http://mariopiperni.com/

.

I commented recently on the ongoing battle within conservative ranks on the direction the Republican party should take. As I wrote, conservatives David Frum and David Horowitz are on opposite ends of this debate.  Frum is old school conservative whose belief is that the Republican party should stand for more than simply a vehicle to get them into power. Integrity and adherence to the basic tenets of conservatism take precedence over lies and deceit as demonstrated by the likes of a Glenn Beck.

Horowitiz takes an opposite and much more delusional view of the matter.

I don’t agree that conservatism is a “very troubled” movement; I don’t think conservative intellectuals are subservient to an entertainment complex, and I don’t think that Fox News has helped to “trap conservatives in a cycle of shrillness, rage, and paranoia that is radically off-putting” to voters. I think this is a slander of Fox and conservatives more suitable to Huffington Post than a conservative website. Fox is a tremendous asset to the conservative movement precisely because it sets the record straight to a mass audience that leftists have so maliciously distorted.

[...]

I also have a problem with your basic presumption that Republicans must clean their house before they can appeal to centrist voters and defeat the left. This implies that the left’s attacks on conservatives have merit and will be blunted if we purge our ranks of embarrassments to our cause – the shrill, the enraged and the paranoid – who in your mind – seem to be Sarah Palin, Rush Limbaugh and now Glenn Beck. Did you notice that these are also our most powerful and feared and charismatic conservatives?

When one side begins their argument with “[Fox] sets the record straight” then you know there’s no real room for discussion. What amazes (and troubles) me, is to realize once again what blind ideology does to one’s sense of honesty and integrity. I have no doubt that Horowitz truly believes that Fox and Beck are for the most part factual in their reporting and as for the “shaky” parts, well I’m sure they dismiss it as acceptable. It’s all for the cause, you know.

It is this energized, unapologetic, in-your-face (but also civilized and intelligent) conservative base on whom the future not only of the movement but the country depends.

If Horowitz is right and the future of the conservative movement depends on the ‘civility’ and ‘intelligence’ of a Glenn Beck or a Rush Limbaugh, then it is safe to surmise that the movement has no future.  It would be more wise and prudent to believe that the future for conservatives and republicans as an influential and beneficial force depends more on the rational and honest thinking of a David Frum.

A Lesbian Mother’s Struggle

Gay and Lesbian Rights http://mariopiperni.com/

.

Janine writes on the woes of a lesbian mother.

___

Tennessee has had its issues with racism as well as allowing guns in both parks and bars. This state, however, reached a new low last year when a Tennessee Trial Court denied a mother, Angel Chandler, overnights with her teenage children simply because of her sexual orientation and because she lived with her lesbian partner of 10 years. This was despite a psychological evaluation which stated that Chandler’s partner was a positive influence on the children. To support it’s denial the trial court invoked a local ‘paramour clause’ which is a “legal restriction that prevents a divorce(e)’s lover from staying in the house overnight while he or she has custody of children from the previous marriage. Heterosexuals can get around this clause by getting married.” Homosexuals in Tennessee do not have the right to marry.

After the trial court’s ruling and in order to be compliant with the court’s order, Chandler and her partner relocated and purchased a duplex so her partner could sleep on one side of the duplex while Chandler and her children slept on the other. Locating to another state on the heels of a custody battle put a great strain on Chandler’s relationship and economic well being.

After suffering the legal inequity from the trial court, Chandler, through the ACLU, decided to fight and took her case up on appeal. The Tennessee Court of Appeals recently handed down their opinion and ordered the matter back to the trial court to reconsider it’s earlier order banning Chandler’s overnights with her children while her partner was in the same house.

The appellate court found: “that the “paramour clause” – a local rule the trial court relied on in its earlier decision, “cannot bind the hands of a trial court to make decisions that are in the best interest of the children who come before the court.” The case will now be sent back to the trial court with the order that it reconsider the parenting plan, this time with the best interests of the children placed ahead of the local rule it had followed before.”

Props to the ACLU for taking this case and to the Tennessee Court of Appeals for recognizing the error of the lower court in denying this mother’s ability to effectively parent her children in Tennessee on the grounds of her sexual orientation.

A step in the right direction for gay and lesbian rights.

Pornography’s Evil Ways – Here’s One I Bet You Never Heard

Stupid People http://mariopiperni.com/

.

A lot of people are hung up on homosexuality. They either cannot understand or choose to not try to understand, therefore making simple acceptance of gays and lesbians impossible for these people. Conservative politicians and the religious right have led the way in feeding the flames of intolerance with their distorted and ridiculous views on homosexuality. The idiocy ranges from “it’s a lifestyle choice” to “it’s a mental disorder”.  Well, here’s a new one.

Michael Schwartz, the chief of staff for Republican Senator Tom Coburn, shows us the degree to which bigotry and/or religious zeal can turn someone into an absolute imbecile.

Homosexuality is inflicted on people… But all pornography is homosexual pornography because all pornography turns your sexual drive inwards. And that in fact is what it does. I know couples now who are struggling with the husband’s addiction to pornography. It’s a terrible thing. And that’s what happens. And, you know, if it doesn’t turn you homosexual, it at least renders you less capable of loving your wife. And it’s something you need to be healed of.

Really? And what “healing” might Mr. Schwartz have in mind? A weekend, perhaps, with disgraced evangelical Ted Haggard?

Does it not frighten and dismay you that people like this have some input in the way in which this country is governed?
