The Globetrottin’ Sarah Palin

Sarah Palin http://mariopiperni.com/

.

Sarah Palin gave her big speech at the CLSA Investors’ Forum in Hong Kong telling inverstors she was there to tell ‘em what it’s like from “Main Street, USA”.  Here are a few choice comments as reported by AFP and WSJ.

Government

“We got into this mess because of government interference in the first place. We’re not interested in government fixes, we’re interested in freedom.”

President Obama

She called his campaign promises “nebulous, utopian sounding…Now 10 months later, though, a lot of Americans are asking: more government? Is that the change we want?”

Economic Crisis

She called for tax cuts as well as the elimination of the capital-gains and estate tax. Then, she said, the world will “watch the U.S. economy roar back to life.”

Health Care

On health care, Ms. Palin defended her previous criticisms that the health-care overhaul proposed by Democrats would lead to health-care rationing and what she called “death panels.” “It’s just common sense that government attempts to solve problems like health care problem will just create new problems.” She called for “market friendly” health care reform that gives tax breaks to individuals to buy health insurance.

Hong Kong (is any Palin speech complete without reference to wild animals?)

“The wildlife-to-human ratio is different from Alaska, but I could get used to it.”

AFP reported that…

Two US delegates left early, with one saying “it was awful, we couldn’t stand it any longer.”

Hmmm…wonder why that would be?  It should also be noted that there’s been no report of there being a Q&A session. Surprise!

Support For Public Option Alive and Well

Health Care Reform http://mariopiperni.com/

.

For proponents of a public option following the health care reform debate over the last two months, it would be understandable to feel somewhat dismayed at the progress being made. Town hall meetings and the like certainly gave the impression that the number of people favoring a public option was dwindling. Well, not so.

In a new survey, when people were asked the following question:

“How important do you feel it is to give people a choice of both a public plan administered by the federal government and a private plan for their health insurance?”

77% stated they thought it to be either extremely or quite important. This is the same level of support shown last June.

And then comes this report:

Over the summer, the loudest voices at town hall meetings belonged to people who opposed health care reform — and they were often pushed to speak out by lobbyist-run organizations. Instead of honest debates on the issues surrounding health care policy, there was a spectacle of irresponsible lies, shouting, and even reports of violence, creating a narrative that the public opposes substantive health care reform put forth by President Obama and congressional Democrats.

The majority of Americans who do favor health reform are beginning to push back. With the media’s attention back on Congress in Washington, many far right protesters have lost interest in showing up and making a spectacle. The people left are those who are actually engaged in the health care debate, and they’re sick of partisan antics.

At a recent town hall, Republican Rep. Eric Cantor was asked:

…how Republicans were going to expand access to healthcare if they have only a four-page list of bullet-points as their plan.

“What is your substantive proposal to meet these real everyday problems that people have? Where’s the beef?”

Think Progress reports on similar questions being asked Republican congressmen.

If the people’s voice could actually be heard above that of the one being generated by special interest groups (health insurance and pharmaceutical companies) then maybe there’s still a chance to salvage this thing.

Creationists Gone Wild

One of my passions, along with politics and art, is evolutionary theory. I’ve been following this stuff for years. So when I came across this, well, it made my day.

Kirk Cameron, best known for his role in the 1980s sitcom Growing Pains, now spends much of his time advocating for far-right Christian evangelical causes.

In a video posted recently to YouTube, Cameron lays out a plan to subvert ‘Darwin Day’ on November 22, 2009 — a date marking the 150th anniversary of the publishing of Charles Darwin’s “Origin of Species.” Cameron says that he and like-minded activists plan to deliver 50,000 copies of an altered version of Darwin’s book to students at dozens of U.S. universities.

Cameron’s got a video out explaining it all which you can view here.  But I’ll save you the trouble and you can catch the response video below which plays snippets of Cameron’s idiocy and the proper response to the crazy talk. I’ll just say that if you find the woman in this video snarky, she is. You’d have to be following the evolution debates over the last many years to understand the frustration one reaches when dealing with the anti-science crowd. Think birthers and you’ll get the idea.
