a footprint in wet sand, a lick of an ice cream cone, frisbee landing on a roof, a tear, a smile, opening the shades to let the morning sun in, playing hoops, a worm on a fishing hook, your baby’s first steps, a kiss, a coffee, turning a page of a favorite book, a child’s laugh, your grandmother’s smile and a thousand other moments…

Republican Rep. Michele Bachmann advising supporters on how to fight the health care bill…
“That’s really where this battle will be won — on our knees in prayer and fasting. Remember: faith without works is dead. So we’re asking you to do all of it: pray, fast, believe, trust the Lord, but also act.”
“fast”??? Sigh.

Torture - America's Shame
.
“…the question of torture – and the United States’ embrace of inhumanity as a core American value under the presidency of George W. Bush – remains, in my view, the pre-eminent moral question in American politics. The descent of the United States – and of Americans in general – to lower standards of morality and justice than those demanded by Iranians of their regime is a sign of the polity’s moral degeneracy.”
[...]
“This is what Bush and Cheney truly achieved in their tragic response to 9/11: two terribly failed, brutally expensive wars, the revival of sectarian warfare and genocide in the Middle East, the end of America’s global moral authority, the empowerment of Iran’s and North Korea’s dictatorships, and the nightmares of Gitmo and Bagram still haunting the new administration.”
“But what they did to the culture – how they systematically dismantled core American values like the prohibition on torture and respect for the rule of law – is the worst and most enduring of the legacies. One political party in this country is now explicitly pro-torture, and wants to restore a torture regime if it regains power. Decent conservatives for the most part simply looked the other way. Unless these cultural forces in defense of violence and torture are defeated – not appeased or excused, but defeated – America will never return the way it once was.”
You’ll need to read the entire piece to understand why Sullivan writes…
“Our job, in other words, is to raise the core moral baseline of Americans to that of Iranians. That’s the depth of the hole Cheney dug. And it’s a hole the current GOP wants to dig deeper and darker.”

The “Mayor of the Country” is back…maybe.
Nineteen months after ending his disastrous run for the presidency, Rudolph W. Giuliani is clearing a path for a possible race for governor in 2010, believing public anger at an ineffectual Albany and unease over the economy could create ideal conditions for a Republican to reclaim the governor’s mansion.
Before the election campaign, I sort of liked Giuliani. Perhaps I just didn’t know enough about him but despite his messy personal life, I respected his toughness and his moderate views after having spent time as both a Democrat and a Republican.
Now, I think he’s just another dick who is more concerned about Rudy Giuliani than the welfare of his country. He’s convinced few that he possesses any true core beliefs. His run to become the Republican presidential candidate highlighted a shallow, little man who was willing to say anything to further his career. His continual references to 9/11 during the campaign to address any and all issues was both comical and disgusting. His one trick pony was “I could protect you from the evil terrorists because I was mayor of New York on September 11″ and it wore thin from the start.
Governor of New York? I hope he tries and gets his ass kicked in.
