I had my first Mojito last night – THE Cuban cocktail drink which I’m told Hemingway enjoyed on his many forays into Cuba. Here’s the recipe he enjoyed at Mojito’s place of birth: La Bodeguita del Medio in Havana. I had mine in Little Havana in Miami. If I could of found my Panama hat, it would of been all so perfect.
1 teaspoon powdered sugar
Juice from 1 lime (2 ounces)
4 mint leaves
1 sprig of mint
Havana Club white Rum (2 ounces)
2 ounces club soda

The American farm, which has weathered the global recession better than most U.S. industries, is starting to succumb to the downturn.
The Agriculture Department forecast Thursday that U.S. farm profits will fall 38% this year, indicating that the slump is taking hold in rural America. Much of the sector had escaped the harsher aspects of the crisis, such as the big drop in property values plaguing city dwellers and suburbanites.
“It is safe to say that the global recession has finally shown up on the doorstep of the agriculture economy,” said Michael Swanson, an agricultural economist.
With profits projected to drop by 38% this year alone, farmer’s problems have become circular. Food prices have dropped which cuts down on profits which forces many farmers to have to borrow to keep the farm up and running. But their chief source of collateral, their land, has seen its value decline significantly thus making borrowing difficult.
It just ain’t easy.

A new survey by Penn, Schoen and Berland Associates for the AARP reveals widespread uncertainty about the nature of the “public option” — a government-run health insurance policy that would be offered along with private policies in the newly-created health insurance exchanges. Just 37 percent of the poll’s respondents correctly identified the public option from a list of three choices provided to them.
The question:
When politicians talk about including a “public option” in healthcare reform, what do you think they mean?
1. Creating a government funded insurance company that competes with existing private insurers to offer health coverage at market prices. (RESPONSE: 37%)
2. Creating a national healthcare system like the on they have in Great Britain. (RESPONSE: 26%)
3. Creating a network of healthcare cooperatives. (RESPONSE: 13%)
4. Don’t know. (RESPONSE: 23%)
It is tempting to attribute these results to attempts by conservatives to blur the distinctions of the health care debate. And surely that is part of the story. But it may not be all that much of it. Democrats were more likely than Republicans to correctly identify the public option in this poll, but not by all that wide a margin — 41 percent versus 34 percent. Meanwhile, 35 percent of Republicans thought the public option refers to “creating a national healthcare system like they have in Great Britain” — but so did 23 percent of Democrats.
This poll is dubious in that it was conducted over the internet which is the least reliable method used in polling. Or as Silver puts it, “this poll belongs in the crap pile.” Ok but it does serve as a reminder that if health care reform is to happen, the message needs to be articulated in a clearer fashion which, of course, is easier said than done.
Somewhere above the noise lies reason and truth. People just need to hear it.

I was going to place this one under the Political Humor post but think it needs it’s own separate post. It’s less funny than unfortunately true.
From Bill Maher…
“Then there’s the people who come to the town hall meetings about health care and think that Obama is going to do the same thing that Hitler did. I mean, what can’t you tell these people that they won’t believe? I could start a rumor right now. I could say, you know what? Under Obama’s health care plan, when you bring your child to a pediatrician, from now on, when he’s done, instead of giving him a balloon, he’s going to give the kid a condom. Stupid is a preexisting condition, yes.”
Yep.
