How did the country survive 8 years of rule by wingnuts?
Senate Republicans are pushing a far-reaching gun amendment, which would allow licensed gun owners to carry concealed weapons across state lines as long as they’re following the law in their home state.
The effort is a fairly radical step for the GOP, emboldened by three previous gun amendments they’ve been able to tack on to unrelated bills.
Democrats are apparently “talking tough” and plan on blocking the amendment. Based on their wimpy behavior of the last many years, I’m not sure that the words tough and Democrat should be allowed in the same sentence.

I’m trying my best to ignore the birther’s road show but it’s just too enthralling. The birth certificate deniers are offering us a political reality show of the first order.
If you’re anything like me, you’ve probably spent a lot of time wondering which tourist attractions in the world you’d visit if you wanted to contract some hideous disease. It’s a common thought, I know. Well, stop wondering. The good people at TripAdvisor have compiled a list of the germiest tourist attractions on the planet.
Blarney Stone, Ireland
On a trip to Ireland a few years back, I had planned on visiting the Blarney Stone and laying a kiss on the famous rock. But somewhere between Dublin and Galway, a red-headed lassie inserted a dagger deep into my heart when I least expected it. Ireland will never be the same.
Market Theater Gum Wall, Seattle
I’ve been to Seattle a couple of times and I don’t know how I could of missed this one. People have been sticking their gum to a particular brick wall there for years and the city has given up on clearing the stuff. It’s now become a living art piece. Very cool. Makes me think of the underside of my parent’s kitchen table back when I was a kid. My brother, sisters and I would be in the habit of sticking our gum to the underside of the table right before dinner time. Every once in a while I’d get down there and take a look up at the colorful display of gum and always be amazed. It too was an organic, living, breathing, growing work of art.
I had to laugh many years later when peering at the underside of my own kitchen table and discovering the array of gum plastered there by my three young children. I wonder if all families with children have similar undersides to their kitchen tables?
St. Mark’s Square, Venice
One pigeon and it’s droppings multiplied by a zillion, gazillion birds and you have a potential health hazard. Apparently the city is working hard to remove all birds from the Square. I hope I get there before they’re successful. In any case, I’m rooting for the birds.
Grauman’s Chinese Theatre, Hollywood
I can see how sticking one’s fingers in the handprint of some famous actor after another million people had done the same could be a bad idea. But hey, I live life on the edge and I’ve visited Grauman’s a number of times and have stuck my hand in Humphrey Bogart’s handprint. I am proud to say that my hand towered over his puny, sissy print.
Oscar Wilde’s Tomb, Paris
Interesting one. Women are apparently in the habit of kissing Wilde’s tombstone and have left a rainbow of colored lipstick over the years. I imagine it’ll be much like my tombstone once I’m laid to rest. Makes me think that I should probably order the super-duper sized stone. It would be rude to not leave adequate room for all available lips.

Let me summarize an exchange which occurred in the comment section of a post here.
A poster (I won’t mention his name. Let’s just call him Tommy) made the claim that a draft health bill revealed that…
On page 16 of the discussion draft of the Bill that was presented last week, http://waysandmeans.house.gov/media/pdf/111/hrdraft.pdf , states that people do not have a right to keep their own health care plan. If they leave their current plan, or if their current plan changes, they must move to the government plan.
A couple of people responded by saying that page 16 of the draft bill said no such thing and one of them (me) wrote…
How can there be hope for compromise and rational discussion when even an obviously intelligent person like yourself gets duped into seeing demons between the lines. If the devil is not there, then simply state it is.
Tommy came back with…
I’m not a conservative, but their response to that would be “Why do you ignore the devil between the lines?”.
Beautiful. In that one line, Tommy points out the number one tactic used by Republicans in opposing everything that the Obama administration has done or plans to do in regards to health reform, foreign policy and fiscal matters. Its simple and works like this: attack at all costs. Period. Attack what Obama says and if you can’t find anything strong enough to attack in the president’s actual words, then read in between the lines and make stuff up.
Give intent to the president’s every statement because it’s not what he says that matters; it’s what conservatives and Republicans interpret as his intention! And hey, who knows better what the president intends than Newt Gingrich and Michael Steele and Rush Limbaugh and, of course, those fair and balanced folk over at Fox. Call Obama a socialist who is out to destroy the country. Call him a Marxist who is out to destroy health care. Call him a neophyte who is out to degrade the power of the U.S. And while you’re at it, tell people he wants to take away your guns. Tell people he’s a baby killer.
Call the president anything but just make sure it sounds real mean and ugly.
Lie. Lie. Lie. Do as Rush did and lie and claim that page 16 spells out the end of private health care. We all know the majority of listeners won’t bother checking out page 16. They’ll just accept it as gospel because Rush told them so. As for the Tommys of the nation who will take the time to check, ah…well that’s where the “devil between the lines” comes into play. They’ll read an innocuous piece of text and see in it the nefarious intent of Obama. The seed was planted and the Tommys are seeing what they want to see, what they need to see. They’re interpreting not as it is but in the way they were told to interpret.
And don’t you dare tell them otherwise. It’s not about truth or logic though they’ll argue until they’re blue in the face that truth is on their side. But it’s never about truth with them. It’s about defending a political ideology at any and all costs and when required, to point out the devil’s handiwork in between each and every line.
