Secretary of State Hillary Clinton’s latest remarks on Iran are quite a departure from the US’s position of not allowing Iran to develop nuclear weapons. …
“We… have made it clear that we’ll take actions, as I’ve said time and time again, crippling action working to upgrade the defences of our partners in the region,” Clinton told Thai television.
“We want Iran to calculate what I think is a fair assessment: that if the United States extends a defence umbrella over the region, if we do even more to develop the military capacity of those (allies) in the Gulf, it is unlikely that Iran will be any stronger or safer because they won’t be able to intimidate and dominate as they apparently believe they can once they have a nuclear weapon.”
The response from Israel’s minister of intelligence…
“I was not thrilled to hear the American statement…that they will protect their allies with a nuclear umbrella, as if they have already come to terms with a nuclear Iran. I think that’s a mistake”
The take on this is that the US’s hope to deter Iran’s nuclear ambitions by way of diplomacy is wavering. If sanctions fail what are the alternatives to stop Iran from developing it’s nuclear arms? Israel’s the wild card here and while an Israeli first-strike is unlikely, it is not improbable.

Sigh. She’s misbehaving this morning…big time. Of course I’m referring to my laptop who is in dire need of a reinstall. But not today. I’ll spend the next hour trying to set her right.
Honestly, I don’t even blame her for acting as she has for the last few weeks. I’ve been somewhat negligent. Taking her for granted. Expecting her to stay up for days at a time, beckoning to my every call to just perform perfectly when all she desires is a malware scan every now and then. That and to have me help out with the cleaning. The screen and keyboards need a thorough scrubbing. And I know that a larger hard drive would maker her happy. More memory too…and a trip to Italy wouldn’t hurt.
I’m going to start being more attentive. In the meantime, we’ve got an open thread. Anything you want.

From my oldest sis comes one of those feel good email things. The line that caught my eye was this one…
I’ve learned that you can tell a lot about a person by the way she/he handles four things:
- a rainy day
- the elderly
- lost luggage
- tangled Christmas tree lights
Yep.

Marsha Blackburn, Republican congresswoman from Tennessee, demonstrates stoopid for all to see…
“…we’re not going to cry ‘emergency’ every time we have a Katrina, every time we have a Tsunami.”
Over 1400 people got killed in Katrina. Classifying it as an emergency would seem to be the logical thing to do. Oh, and Blackburn approved emergency funding in the wake of Katrina.

This is, at once, a fringe movement and something greater. It’s fringe because no important Republicans believe it, and most are offended by it. It’s greater because some fairly prominent local lawmakers are beginning to sign birther petitions.
At least nine members of Congress have cosponsored a birther bill that would require prospective presidents to affirm their U.S. citizenship. What we don’t know is how widespread the belief is among Republicans — and even if the belief is confined to a narrow minority, whether the belief will spread as Republicans begin to pay closer attention to electoral politics in 2010 and 2012.
[...]
Republicans have to be extra careful. If they give credence to the birthers, they’re (not only advancing ignorance but also) betraying the narrowness of their base. If they dismiss this growing movement, they might drive birthers to find more extreme candidates, which will fragment a Republican political coalition.
Republicans are in a dilemma of sorts as spelled out in that last paragraph. It is a problem which all political parties face to some degree. What to do with the fringe elements of one’s party? Ignore or appease? For most parties, ignoring is the way to go and there is little if any collateral damage in doing so as long as the mainstream press is on your side…which is the case in most instances. Most people have no problem taking a well-deserved poke at the kooks.
Republicans don’t have it so easy.
The fringe element of the party, while not a majority, does form a substantial part of the Republican base. Aside from birthers, they have gun crazies, religious fanatics, Moral Majority types bent on shoving their brand of morality down everyone’s throat, militia advocates ready to storm the Bastille and more. This is a party which elects a Michelle ‘Screw The Census’ Bachmann to Congress! The crazies are plentiful (and vocal) within the ranks of the Republican party therefore making it more difficult to just ignore them.
The second reason Republicans don’t have it easy has to do with the power and long reach of the tin foil hat crowd within the conservative media. When a Rush Limbaugh (with an influence which extends beyond his 20 million listeners) starts demanding that the President show his birth certificate, it becomes that much more difficult for GOP leaders to simply dismiss birthers. No GOP leader is willing to tangle with El Rushbo.
Liberals and Democrats should rejoice every time a birther demands that the President prove his citizenship or a Bachmann type talks about arming the masses in preparation for whatever. It makes it that much more difficult for independents to cast their vote for the Republican party when the time comes.
