Just when I think I’m understanding the gun culture mindset, they do something to throw me off. First there was guns and booze. I swallowed hard but…ok. Then guns in parks. I struggled with that one too but finally came around. The guns in churches was going to take some time to accept and then…out of nowhere, comes the following…
BUTLER, Mo. — Those purchasing a vehicle at Max Motors in Missouri will receive an AK-47 assault rifle with their purchase during the month of August.
“We already did handguns,” Muller said. “Let’s do something more fun — AKs. You ever shot an AK? Oh, they’re a blast.”
I’m sure they are. Every household should have an assault rifle right next to their Jack Daniels, picnic basket and Bible.
The guns and car combo reminds me of that classic scene from Godfather 1 when Sonny takes his final, lonely ride…

I like Rachel Maddow. Aside from her politics, intellect and full command of the issues, her respectful and engaging style is most welcome in a media world filled with blowhards. She does battle here with Pat Buchanan over the Sonia Sotomayor nomination and affirmative action. It starts with a clip of President Obama in full oratorical form addressing the NAACP.
Maddow is right. Buchanan is locked in a 1950s mentality. Aside from his racist overtones, he is factually wrong on a number of things he said. MediaMatters (with full links) points them all out.
Sotomayor has written a number of law review articles.
Blacks did die at Gettysburg and 200,000 fought in the civil war of which 38,000 of them died.
Nearly 2000 African-Americans took part in the Normandy invasion.
1.2 million African-Americans served in World War II along with hundreds of thousands of other Hispanic, Asian and Native Americans.
Yet, Buchanan makes the statement that “this has been a country built, basically, by white folks in this country.” This was his response as to why 108 of the 110 Supreme Court justices have been white males. What? While it is true that the country was founded by “white folk”, it has been built by the collected effort and suffering of Americans of all skin color.
If Republicans have any real intent on becoming a Big Tent party which is home to more than white males, they’re going to have to do better than Pat Buchanan as a spokesman. Surely there must be young, forward looking young conservatives who are not locked in a 1950s-60s mindset. Time to put Pat out to pasture.

Ronald Reagan would not be pleased. Republicans talking bad of Republicans. A couple of former Republican Congressman are accusing their colleagues of having turned a blind eye to the Constitution in favor of party politics.
Former Rep. Chris Shays (R-Conn.)…
Speaking at a panel on congressional oversight powers, Shays argued that had more members of Congress, including Republicans, gone to Iraq and visited Abu Ghraib, prisoner abuses would have come to light sooner.
“That would have alerted the administration to what was happening, the command authority to what was happening and it probably would have saved a 1,000 lives,” Shays said. Shays said the Bush White House abused its powers in a way that resulted in many of the domestic and international problems that have unfolded recently.
“This past Republican Congress hurt this administration by not having some hearings,” said the Connecticut Republican. “Had we had hearings it would have nipped those problems in the bud.”
Strong stuf but it’s not anything we did not already know. Nice to hear it coming out of the mouths of Republicans though.
How long before Limbaugh claims that Shays wasn’t a real Republican anyway.

Here’s what an extremist, radical, dangerous and ignorant politician sounds like. Catherine Crabill, the Republican’s nominee for state elections in Virginia, is babbling about using the Second Amendment to defend the anti-tax Tea Party movement.
“We have the chance to fight this battle at the ballot box before we have to resort to the bullet box. That’s the beauty of our Second Amendment rights … Our Second Amendment rights were to guard against tyranny.”
The “bullet box”?!? How much longer before this type of insane talk gets someone killed and if this isn’t promoting domestic terrorism than what is? Is misinterpreting and hiding behind the Constitution all it takes for any hillbilly quack to get on a soapbox and incite violence?
