Everyone should be ecstatic that when John McCain mouths off on his simplistic approach to foreign policy, it is not as president of the United States. Here’s his take on the Iranian elections.
“He [Obama] should speak out that this is a corrupt, flawed sham of an election and that the Iranian people have been deprived of their rights.”
[the Iranian people] “should not be subjected to four more years of (President Mahmoud) Ahmadinejad and the radical Muslim clerics.”
Dumb. The worst thing the US could do at this time is to speak out forcefully against Ahmadinejad. Doing so would allow Mousavi’s opponents to tie him to the United States and portray him as a U.S. lackey. Obama’s approach so far has been to comment on the post-election violence but not show support for either side. Sen. Richard Lugar, “the leading Republican on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee thinks the Obama administration’s arms-length stance is just right.”
“I think for the moment our position is to allow the Iranians to work out their situation. When popular revolutions occur, they come right from the people.” He said he did not think it would be wise for the United States “to become heavily involved in the election at this point.”
More to the point is this advice from an Iranian spokesman.
“But I think it’s wise for the U.S. government to keep its distance.” The White House can and should “show concern for human life and protesters’ safety and promote tolerance and dialogue.” But to get any further involved, even rhetorically, would “instigate the cry that the reformers are somehow driven and directed by the U.S., whether under Bush or under Obama, and there’s no reason to give that unfounded allegation” any chance to spread.
Thankfully, John McCain is not president.

As the health care reform debate heats up, you can expect to see a lot of these type ads…
.
.
FactCheck.org pretty much dismantles the ad and explains why it is misleading. Basically, the ad does not depict what the president is calling for in health care reform. But who would know this unless one chose to inform themselves and, sad to say, the majority of people out there just won’t bother and will instead opt to have their opinions formed by 30 second ads.
In the end, public opinion will be decided less by hard facts then by the perception of facts. What else is new?

Allowing guns in bars was loony enough but now Tennessee’s new gun bill allows permit holders to carry guns in parks.
Cities and counties across Tennessee are preparing this week to deal with the fallout from a raft of pro-gun bills recently signed into law in the state, where Republicans are flexing their new-found strength in the legislature.
Among the new laws is one that would allow people who have permits to carry guns to carry them in all public parks in the state, including local parks. Another would exempt from federal regulation guns and ammunition made in Tennessee and kept within its borders.
The guns-in-park law is crazy enough but the “Tennessee Firearms Freedom Act” is as controversial.
[The Act] says that firearms and ammunition made and sold within the state, and stamped “Made in Tennessee,” are beyond the jurisdiction of the federal government. The theory is that if firearms are not sold across state lines they cannot be considered part of interstate commerce and are therefore exempt from federal regulations.
So what’s the deal with Tennessee? Even Wyatt Earp understood that leaving guns at the door made for a safer Dodge. The answer might lie here…
Whatever the practical result of Tennessee’s new gun laws, they may well serve a political purpose: firing up the conservative base before next year’s state, local and congressional elections.
“The Republicans are trying to embarrass the Democrats,” said John Geer, a political scientist at Vanderbilt University in Nashville.
“They want to put these proposals on the table not only because they believe in guns, but they want to force the Democrats to come out as anti-gun,” he said. “You can see the attack ads forming already. The Republicans have won this issue.”

As President Barack Obama flies Monday to Chicago for a midday speech on health-care reform, the round trip on Air Force One will run about $236,000, according to government estimates of the operating costs for one of the top symbols, and perks, of the presidency.
But that does not include such expenses as Secret Service protection, motorcades and helicopter transports.
Ok. And? What’s the point?
We get it. The president uses Air Force One to get from A to B. So did Bush, Clinton and Reagan as will the next president, Democrat or Republican. Obama is not going to fly economy on JetBlue or take a window seat on a Greyhound. Deal with it.

Why would a racist post his sick comment on a social networking site? How stupid is that?
Rusty DePass, a Republican party activist, posted the above comment on Facebook. He admitted he was referring to Michelle Obama and has since apologized.
Expect four years of bigots like DePass being unable to reign in their racist views. Some things just can’t be restrained.
