I’ve written before on the difficulty comedians have in coming up with Obama material. The Economist picks up on the theme.
The real Mr Obama baffles other comedians. David Letterman describes him as “cogent, eloquent, and in complete command of the issues” and sighs: “What the hell am I supposed to do with that?” The new president is “not fat, not cheating on his wife, not stupid, not angry and not a phony”, complains Bill Maher.
Here’s my favorite…
Chris Rock likens Mr Obama to Brad Pitt. “There’s no Brad Pitt jokes,” he told CNN. “You know, what are you going to say? ‘Ooh, you used to have sex with Jennifer Aniston. Now you have sex with Angelina Jolie. You’re such a loser’.”
Good one.

The internal battle within conservative ranks on defining what a Republican should sound like continues unabated.
Under intense fire from the right, former secretary of state Colin L. Powell is preparing to answer his Republican critics this weekend in a television appearance that is likely to add fuel to his long-standing feud with top conservatives in his party.
The appearance will come just days after Powell, one of the country’s leading black political figures, told an audience in Boston that a new Republican Party is “waiting to emerge.” Earlier this month, he said the party is in “deep trouble” because “Americans are looking for more government in their life, not less.”
At issue it would appear is how vocal moderate republicans are allowed to be. A Powell or Spector would be more than welcome in the party as long as they kept their mouth shut or voted along party lines.
Powell served as Bush’s secretary of state and avoided partisan political activities after leaving the White House at the end of Bush’s first term. That changed late in the 2008 presidential campaign, when he endorsed Barack Obama.
Since the election, he has called for the GOP to target mainstream moderates and abandon “impractical” ideas. That message, delivered in fits and starts, has proved too much for some conservatives as the party struggles to find its voice following Obama’s victory. Radio talk show host Rush Limbaugh and former vice president Richard B. Cheney have attacked Powell in recent days as a traitor to his party.
Some appear to understand the importance of retaining the Powells of the party a bit more than others.
“We are not going to get to a majority if we weed out people who disagree,” said Rep. Mark Souder (Ind.). “I’m very conservative, but we need people like him, even if we disagree on some issues.”
Sen. John Thune (S.D.), a member of the GOP leadership in the Senate, said Powell is “one of the greatest leaders of our generation, and he is at heart a Republican.”
Unless a strong and well-balanced charismatic leader soon emerges from the ranks of the party, it is difficult to see how it’ll get past its current dismal state. Sticking to hard unwavering conservative principles is not going to attract the independents which make up more than a third of the electorate. The ideologues are killing the party.

No doubt about it. The Republican Party has become a caricature of a political party. This gang of cartoon characters has now recycled one of the most despicable campaign ads ever run – the 1964 Daisy ad used by Lyndon Johnson in 1964. The original ad aired once and was immediately pulled after massive criticism of its fear-mongering theme. The now desperate Republicans, void of any semblance of common sense or ideas, has decided that fear is the only way it could possibly win.
In the middle or so, you’ll hear Press Secretary Robert Gibbs clipped in such a way that it appears he is saying that closing GITMO was a “hasty decision” the Obama administration made. Actually, Gibbs was referring to the poor decision-making of the previous administration. Another future-minded thing the RNC might want to focus on is not including such easily debunked content in their issue ads.
Sensible conservatives who calls themselves a Republican must surely be walking around these days with a paper bag over their head. When all you’ve got to sell is fear, you’ve got nothing.
Here’s the original Daisy ad.
