Petraeus on Gitmo

General David Petraeus http://mariopiperni.com/

The big guns are speaking out on closing Guantanamo and ending torture techniques. Colin Powell reaffirmed his backing of the president on both fronts and now General Petraeus speaks

General David Petraeus said this past weekend that President Obama’s decision to close down Gitmo and end harsh interrogation techniques would benefit the United States in the broader war on terror.

“With respect to Guantanamo,” Petraeus added, “I think that the closure in a responsible manner, obviously one that is certainly being worked out now by the Department of Justice — I talked to the Attorney General the other day [and] they have a very intensive effort ongoing to determine, indeed, what to do with the detainees who are left, how to deal with them in a legal way, and if continued incarceration is necessary — again, how to take that forward. But doing that in a responsible manner, I think, sends an important message to the world, as does the commitment of the United States to observe the Geneva Convention when it comes to the treatment of detainees.”

Petraeus is the right’s hero so it’ll be interesting to see how they counter his thoughts.  Cheney vs. Petraeus?  No contest.  Lying scumbag vs. the top military mind in the forces today.

President Obama had expressed his desire to add diversity to the Supreme Court.  In choosing Sonia Sotomayor to replace Justice Souter, he has lived up to his word.

  • female
  • Hispanic – parents born in Puerto Rico
  • raised in the housing projects of the Bronx by her mother
  • Princeton graduate (summa cum laude)
  • Yale law school (editor of Yale Law Journal)
  • first appointed to the federal court by Bush 41

Brilliant choice and Republicans will have a difficult time in blocking her confirmation.

Olé indeed.

Kurtzman’s round-up

“In competing speeches today, President Obama said the U.S. went off course with practices like waterboarding. Cheney retaliated by saying he doesn’t regret any of the decisions he made, and if he had to do it all over again, he would order President Bush to do exactly the same thing. And then he ate a baby.” –Jimmy Kimmel

“Torture — that is the story that just will not go away in this country, and now with Nancy Pelosi in the middle of it. Yes, Republicans keep changing their story on torture. First it was, ‘We didn’t torture.’ Then it was, ‘Okay we tortured, but it worked.’ And now it’s, ‘Nancy Pelosi said we could! She said it was okay!’” –Bill Maher

“Hey, President Obama has found a way to quickly close Guantanamo Bay. He’s going to turn it into a Pontiac dealership.” –Jay Leno

“Newsweek is reporting that at the Gridiron Dinner, Joe Biden started talking and accidentally revealed Dick Cheney’s secret hiding place. See, there’s more proof you don’t need waterboarding to get secret information. Just give Joe Biden a couple of drinks.” –Jay Leno

Awareness…

top_logo

Animal cruelty is one of those issues most of us are aware of.  It’s one of those issues we push to the back of our minds as we happily munch on our burgers and fried chicken.  It’s one of those unpleasant issues we’d rather not think about and we can always justify our inaction by rattling off the score of real-life issues which consume us on a daily basis: the economy, war, personal hardship or sorrow, etc.

At least, that’s the case with me.

And then I come across a video like this one and for the moment, I feel anger.

So what to do? I’m not sure but I do know it begins with awareness.
