President Obama and Earmark Reform

Obama's Budget Reform

Obama's Budget Reform

Countering right-wing misinformation is a full time job.   Leading the pack, of course, is Fox News but they’re not alone.   Almost every radical conservative media source, be it radio or print, have been in attack mode.  Their mission is to paint President Obama as a liar, as incompetent and as a failure.   The fact that they themselves need to lie about the facts to make their point is not a deterrent to conservatives.  As the old line goes, they never let the facts get in the way of a good story.

Let’s take a look at the earmarks controversy.  If Fox News is your source of information, then you would be under the mistaken impression that President Obama said during the election campaign that he would eliminate all earmarks. Just a week ago, Sean Hannity had this to say about Obama; “in the presidential debate with John McCain, [Obama] said, ‘I’m going to go line by line.  I’m going to eliminate all the earmarks.‘”

Anyone who followed the election campaign would know that Hannity’s comment is false.  A reading of the transcript from the 2nd presidential debate would reveal that what Obama actually said was:

[I will go] line by line through every item in the federal budget and eliminate programs that don’t work and make sure that those that do work, work better and cheaper.”

Quite a difference between fact and propaganda, I’d say.  On March 11, President Obama crystallized his position on earmarks.

Let me be clear: Done right, earmarks have given legislators the opportunity to direct federal money to worthy projects that benefit people in their districts, and that’s why I’ve opposed their outright elimination.”

The only occasion at which President Obama stated that he wanted to eliminate earmarks was at a January meeting with his economic advisers where he said the following.

We will ban all earmarks in the recovery package and I describe earmarks as the process by which individual members insert pet projects without review.”

You can view the video of the above meeting below.  The above quote can be found at the 7 minute mark of the video.

In summary, Obama, as both candidate and president, has been consistent in his approach to earmarks.  His goal is to introduce full transparency to the earmark process and to eliminate secretive or back door shenanigans.

Barack O’bama’s Irish Ancestry

President O'bama

President O'bama

Dig down deep enough and it would seem that everyone has Irish blood somewhere in their lineage.  Well President Obama certainly does.

Fulmouth Kearney, who left Moneygall in County Offally, Ireland almost 160 years ago, happens to be Obama’s great-great-great grandfather on his mother’s side.

Today Irish Prime Minister Brian Cowen is meeting with the president and will present him with baptismal documents proving Obama’s Irish ancestral roots.

Nice.

Whether or not Irish blood flows through your veins, a Happy St. Patrick’s to all!

Fox News – Where Lying is What They Do

In another example of the ways in which Fox manipulates the news, this one is disgustingly blatant. This Sunday, Martha MacCallum of Fox News claimed that “after weeks of economic doom and gloom, the Obama administration is now singing a slightly different tune. Take a look at what was said in recent interviews this weekend.”  Fox then proceeded to play a clip of Joe Biden stating that the “fundamentals of the economy are strong.”

Well, after Democrats slammed John McCain for saying those very words during the campaign, hearing Biden saying them now is pretty damning.  Except, as MediaMatters revealed…Biden did not say those words this past weekend.  He said them last September and…he was quoting McCain at the time!  Here is the exact transcript of Joe Biden’s words from six months ago;

Ladies and gentlemen, I believe that’s why John McCain could say with a straight face, as recently as this morning — and this is a quote: “The fundamentals of the economy are strong.” That’s what John says. He says that “we’ve made great progress economically” in the Bush years.

Ladies and gentlemen, ladies and gentlemen, I could walk from here to Lansing, and I wouldn’t run into a single person who thought our economy was doing well, unless I ran into John McCain.”

So, a supposedly “fair and balanced” network news channel, runs a clip of Joe Biden from last September quoting John McCain, and makes it appear as if Biden was speaking for himself on the weekend.  How anyone can believe anything that comes out of Fox is beyond me.  It truly is the source of “news” for those who don’t care whether the news they obtain is real or fabricated.

Faux News – “we lie, you decide…suckers

George W. Bush Presidential Library

The George W. Bush Presedential Library

The George W. Bush Presedential Library

It appears that raising the $500 million needed to build George Bush’s library is not going to be an easy task.  In tight economic times, fundrasing is always an effort.  Adding to the difficulty is the little fact that Bush’s fan base is somewhat limited as the majority of people in the country are skepitcal of his presidency.

Really?  I wonder why that would be?  It surely can’t be because of his reckless war in Iraq…or his disastrous economic policies…or his abuses on the Constitution…or his handling of Katrina…or his politicizing of the judicial system…or any of another score of Bush atrocities.

Nah.  I’m sure it’s a temporary blip in public opinion and in due time, Mr. Bush will be remembered for his greatness.

In any event, I’ve done my little part in helping out the guy.

Climate Change – Are We Ready To Finally Start Doing Something?

Climate Change - Time to act

Climate Change - Time to act

As the phony debate created by global warming deniers continues, the threat from climate change continues unimpeded.   A climate change conference in Copenhagen was attended by more than 2500 delegates from nearly 80 nations.  The International Scientific Congress Climate Change: Global Risks, Challenges & Decisions has just released a press release on the draft findings.

Here are the six preliminary key messages as outlined in the release:

Key Message 1: Climatic Trends

Recent observations confirm that, given high rates of observed emissions, the worst-case IPCC scenario trajectories (or even worse) are being realized. For many key parameters, the climate system is already moving beyond the patterns of natural variability within which our society and economy have developed and thrived. These parameters include global mean surface temperature, sea-level rise, ocean and ice sheet dynamics, ocean acidification, and extreme climatic events. There is a significant risk that many of the trends will accelerate, leading to an increasing risk of abrupt or irreversible climatic shifts.

Key Message 2: Social disruption

The research community is providing much more information to support discussions on dangerous climate change. Recent observations show that societies are highly vulnerable to even modest levels of climate change, with poor nations and communities particularly at risk. Temperature rises above 2oC will be very difficult for contemporary societies to cope with, and will increase the level of climate disruption through the rest of the century.

Key Message 3: Long-Term Strategy

Rapid, sustained, and effective mitigation based on coordinated global and regional action is required to avoid dangerous climate change regardless of how it is defined. Weaker targets for 2020 increase the risk of crossing tipping points and make the task of meeting 2050 targets more difficult. Delay in initiating effective mitigation actions increases significantly the long-term social and economic costs of both adaptation and mitigation.

Key Message 4 – Equity Dimensions

Climate change is having, and will have, strongly differential effects on people within and between countries and regions, on this generation and future generations, and on human societies and the natural world. An effective, well-funded adaptation safety net is required for those people least capable of coping with climate change impacts, and a common but differentiated mitigation strategy is needed to protect the poor and most vulnerable.

Key Message 5: Inaction is Inexcusable

There is no excuse for inaction. We already have many tools and approaches – economic, technological, behavioral, management – to deal effectively with the climate change challenge. But they must be vigorously and widely implemented to achieve the societal transformation required to de-carbonize economies. A wide range of benefits will flow from a concerted effort to alter our energy economy now, including sustainable energy job growth, reductions in the health and economic costs of climate change, and the restoration of ecosystems and revitalization of ecosystem services.

Key Message 6: Meeting the Challenge

To achieve the societal transformation required to meet the climate change challenge, we must overcome a number of significant constraints and seize critical opportunities. These include reducing inertia in social and economic systems; building on a growing public desire for governments to act on climate change; removing implicit and explicit subsidies; reducing the influence of vested interests that increase emissions and reduce resilience; enabling the shifts from ineffective governance and weak institutions to innovative leadership in government, the private sector and civil society; and engaging society in the transition to norms and practices that foster sustainability.

____

Of special note is key message 5:  ‘Inaction is Inexcusable’   Without the concerted effort of nations like the U.S. and China to enact real legislation and implement new policies in combating man’s effect on climate, all of the conferences in the world won’t get us anywhere.  With President Obama in the White House, the world is hopefully closer to finally getting down to work and doing what needs to be done.

Simply put…we’re running out of time.
