I think I’m starting to like RNC chairman Michael Steele…and it has nothing to do with his politics. There’s an earthiness to his comments which are quite refreshing in a political climate which is rife with doublespeak.
With the exception of knocking Rush Limbaugh, Steele appears to have no fear in criticizing his own party for the many mistakes they have made in the last number of years – mistakes which have gotten them into the sorry situation they find themselves in. Here are a few things he told a group of 750 Republicans on Friday.
“I’m tired of seeing the same old, same old. I’m tired of hearing the same old arguments. I’m tired of hearing the complaining.”
“If you want to complain and moan and groan about everything going on, there’s the door.”
As to the dismal performance of Republicans in the last election, Steele said the following about his party having controlled both the White House and Congress:
“We started drinking from that wonderful Potomac River. We got that Potomac fever, and we lost our minds.”
Lost your minds, indeed!

It’s been five months since the citizens of Minnesota cast their ballots and they’re still missing a senator. The Al Franken/Norm Coleman trial has come to an end and a verdict might be in this week. Franken is expected to win but by the sounds coming out of the Coleman camp, it still won’t be over. Here’s how it all came down to this point:
After the candidates spent $30 million in the senatorial race last November, Coleman came out ahead by a margin of 475 votes.
An automatic hand recount gave Franken a 225 vote lead.
A bipartisan state canvassing board declared Franken the victor on January 5.
Coleman sued and a long and arduous 7 week trial which focused largely on absentee ballots, came to an end this week.
“Hamline University professor David Schultz, who has been watching the case closely, described the judges as “unsympathetic” to Coleman’s arguments that thousands of absentee ballots were wrongly rejected and that others were counted twice.”
“In a universe of about 1,400 ballots that Schultz considers most likely to be counted, he thinks that there are not enough eligible votes to reverse the results.”
“Nothing is sure either way until the judges rule, and even then, an appeal to the state supreme court is virtually assured, Coleman staffers say.”
Coleman refuses to give it up. There is much speculation that part of this circus act involves the Republican party wanting to delay Franken’s entry into the Senate for as long as they can. With one less Democrat vote, it makes it that much more difficult to pass the budget bill which will be highly contested by Republicans come this April.
So as Rome burns, Nero fiddles away…

Alaska Governor Sarah Palin is refusing to accept almost half a billion in stimulus money. Palin stated she will only accept $514 million of the $930.7 million allocated to Alaska. Unlike GOP governors Arnold Schwarzenegger of California and Charlie Crist of Florida who have welcomed the stimulus money, Palin is following the pattern set by Republican governors Mark Sanford of South Carolina and Bobby Jindal of Louisiana who are part of a group that have rejected the stimulus money allocated for their states.
“The news Thursday drew anger from those who accused Palin of putting her national political aspirations ahead of the state’s interests, and admiration from others who say she has courage to turn down money that would expand government. The state Legislature will have an opportunity to override her decision.”
“Palin said she is accepting the federal stimulus money that would go for construction projects, but not funding directed at government operations.”
“The biggest single chunk of money that Palin is turning down is about $170 million for education, including money that would go for programs to help economically disadvantaged and special needs students. Anchorage School Superintendent Carol Comeau said she is “shocked and very disappointed” that Palin would reject the schools money. She said it could be used for job preservation, teacher training, and helping kids who need it.”
The Democratic National Committee released the following statement:
“After soliciting and accepting more federal dollars per capita than any other governor in the union, Sarah Palin’s decision today to deny the state of Alaska over half a billion dollars in recovery and reinvestment funds – including millions for schools, energy and public safety – appears to be nothing more than political posturing. At a time when her state is suffering, Alaska’s working families cannot afford a governor that puts her political future ahead of the needs of the state and its families.”
Exactly! Palin is turning down…
$160 million for education.
$17 million in Department of Labor funds (vocational rehabilitation services, unemployment services, etc.),
$9 million for Health and Social Services
$7 million for Public Safety
It is obvious to all but the most partisan that Palin is positioning herself for a run in the 2012 presidential elections. She is laying the groundwork for her future campaign cry of smaller and more fiscally responsible government. In light of her record as governor, the stench of hypocrisy coming out of her office is sickening.
Look for the Alaskan State Legislature to overturn her decision.

On the occasion of Nowruz, the Iranian new year fesitval, President Obama extended a hand of friendship and cooperation to the leaders of Iran.
No one is naive enough to believe that simple dialogue will instantly heal the divisions between the two countries. Iran is still a rogue nation with it’s continued pursuit of nuclear capability and it’s threatening stance against Israel. But having a president willing to try diplomacy in place of threatening rhetoric, is promising and follows up on Obama’s promise to chart a new course in U.S. foreign policy.
Let’s hope the president’s efforts lead us back into a time where diplomacy is neither a dirty word or a sign of weakness.
“You, too, have a choice. The United States wants the Islamic Republic of Iran to take its rightful place in the community of nations.”
“You have that right, but it comes with real responsibilities, and that place cannot be reached through terror or arms, but rather through peaceful actions that demonstrate the true greatness of the Iranian people and civilization.”
