Let it be known that I picked Slumdog Millionaire to win the Best Picture Oscar as soon as the closing credits began rolling the day I first saw this movie.
I’ve got this little thing where after watching a movie which has touched me in some significant way, I instantly rank it in my personal list of all-time favorites. After watching Slumdog Millionaire I immediately placed it somewhere around the #5 slot in the only movie ranking scheme which counts. Of course I speak of the MPMR (Mario Piperni Movie Rankings). As I noted in a post back in January, this film has it all – acting, plot, cinematography as well as an amazing soundtrack.
Now, for those of you who are dying to know what my favorite movie of all time might be, it’s Casablanca, followed closely by The Godfather 1 and 2. I doubt if any film will ever take over that number 1 slot from Casablanca. It’s a classic in every sense of the word.
I’d enjoy hearing what your favorite all-time film might be and why. Let us know.
(On a side note, I think I’m falling in love with Kate Winslet. What a beautiful, elegant woman. Hey Kate…I’m available!)

The White House will be presenting a budget summary for the fiscal year which begins in October. The summary will be given to Congress this Thursday with the completed document to be ready in April. Complicating the issue and swelling the $1.2 trillion deficit Obama inherited from Bush are the $787 billion recovery bill as well as various bailouts issued in the hope of stemming the falling economy.
The budget, according to the Washington Post, will be a combination of spending cuts and eliminating tax cuts to the wealthy. A major component will be preparing the way for extensive health reform as promised by Obama in the election campaign. In his weekly address to the nation, Obama said he intends to “get exploding deficits under control“. Furthermore, he said his budget summary will be “sober in its assessments, honest in its accounting, and lays out in detail my strategy for investing in what we need, cutting what we don’t, and restoring fiscal discipline.”
“Even before Congress approved the stimulus package this month, congressional budget analysts forecast that this year’s deficit would approach $1.2 trillion — 8.3 percent of the overall economy, the highest since World War II. With the stimulus and other expenses, some analysts say, the annual gap between federal spending and income could reach $2 trillion when the fiscal year ends in September.”
“Obama proposes to dramatically reduce those numbers, said White House budget director Peter Orszag: “We will cut the deficit in half by the end of the president’s first term.” The plan would keep the deficit hovering near $1 trillion in 2010 and 2011, but shows it dropping to $533 billion by 2013, he said — still high but a more manageable 3 percent of the economy.”
The New York Times also ran an interesting piece on the upcoming budget in which they write of the Obama administration’s intent on eliminating shady accounting practices used by the previous administration. The Times writes,
“For his first annual budget next week, President Obama has banned four accounting gimmicks that President George W. Bush used to make deficit projections look smaller. The price of more honest bookkeeping: A budget that is $2.7 trillion deeper in the red over the next decade than it would otherwise appear, according to administration officials.”
“Mr. Obama’s banishment of the gimmicks, which have been widely criticized, is in keeping with his promise to run a more transparent government. Fiscal sleight of hand has long been a staple of federal budgets, giving rise to phrases like “rosy scenario” and “magic asterisks.”
It’s going to take some special kind of magic for Obama to keep the population patient as he tackles both the massive deficit and the overall economic crisis he inherited. Good luck.
Democrat Senator Roland Burris has made it clear he is unwilling to resign his senate seat. Burris, who was appointed to the position by impeached former Illinois governor Rod Blagojevich, has been adamant in declaring his innocence despite reversing his statements on the contact he had with the former governor.
On January 5, Burris claimed he had not spoken to Blagojevich or his office regarding the Senate seat left vacant by Barack Obama. This week he stated he did indeed speak with at least 5 people in Blagojevich’s office and had attempted to raise money for the then governor all the while expressing his interest in the senate seat.
I don’t see any way for Burris to escape the entrapment of his own words. He will eventually step down but we’ll have to see how long he’s going to drag out this ridiculous melodrama.
Make no mistake about it; the far right conservative wing of the republican party is loony. Actually, describing them as loony is too kind. They are certifiably insane. These crackpots are intent on dividing the country with their incessant lies and insane statements. But don’t take my word for it. Watch the following clip from Countdown. The segment I’d like you to pay attention to occurs about 1 1/2 minutes into the clip. Listen to what conservative extremist Alan Keyes has to say about President Obama.
“Obama is a radical communist. He is going to destroy this country…the United States is going to cease to exist“, radical conservative Keyes claims. I’m not going to bother to try to refute anything this lunatic has to say about Obama. It’s all too ridiculous. What is bothersome though, is that crackpots like Keyes, along with conservatives like Limbaugh and Hannity, do have influence on a large part of the conservative movement. Now, that’s scary.
I read a post on a popular conservative blog today where the writer wrote about 500 words on a “feeling” he had about Obama which bothered him. He didn’t ever give us any information as to why he had this bad “feeling” but only that the President bothered him in some strange, frightening way and he was certain something sinister was in the works. The writer was convinced Obama was “hiding something“.
Pure wackiness.
The 6 or 7 people who bothered to post a comment all agreed with the writer with one of them stating, “Obama is a Muslim. He’s conspiring with Muslim leaders to destroy the USA.”
The irony of it all is that if anything is ever going to destroy the USA, it’ll probably be the lunacy of the far right conservative movement.
