The Inaugural Address – The Highlights

President Obama’s inaugural speech touched on all the key issues of which he’s spoken of so eloquently over the last two years.

On service to the nation

“Starting today, we must pick ourselves up, dust ourselves off, and begin again the work of remaking America,”

On a different approach to politics and restoring trust in government…

“On this day, we come to proclaim an end to the petty grievances and false promises, the recriminations and worn-out dogmas, that for far too long have strangled our politics.”

“What the cynics fail to understand is that the ground has shifted beneath them — that the stale political arguments that have consumed us for so long no longer apply,”

On forging a new approach to battling terrorism and nuclear profliferation

“…you cannot outlast us, and we will defeat you.”

“As for our common defense, we reject as false the choice between our safety and our ideals. Our Founding Fathers, faced with perils we can scarcely imagine, drafted a charter to assure the rule of law and the rights of man, a charter expanded by the blood of generations. Those ideals still light the world, and we will not give them up for expediency’s sake.”

“They understood that our power alone cannot protect us, nor does it entitle us to do as we please. Instead, they knew that our power grows through its prudent use; our security emanates from the justness of our cause, the force of our example, the tempering qualities of humility and restraint.”

On restoring America’s leadership role in the world

“And so to all other peoples and governments who are watching today, from the grandest capitals to the small village where my father was born: Know that America is a friend of each nation and every man, woman and child who seeks a future of peace and dignity, and that we are ready to lead once more.”

On a new approach to diplomacy

“To those leaders around the globe who seek to sow conflict, or blame their society’s ills on the West: Know that your people will judge you on what you can build, not what you destroy. To those who cling to power through corruption and deceit and the silencing of dissent, know that you are on the wrong side of history; but that we will extend a hand if you are willing to unclench your fist.”

On the significance of an African American president..

“…a man whose father less than 60 years ago might not have been served at a local restaurant can now stand before you to take a most sacred oath.”

On his commitment to the nation…

“Today I say to you that the challenges we face are real. They are serious and they are many. They will not be met easily or in a short span of time. But know this, America: They will be met.”

On hope

“On this day, we gather because we have chosen hope over fear, unity of purpose over conflict and discord.”

And so,  with the words and the ceremony behind us, the work now begins…

President Barack Obama’s Inaugural Address

The Challenges Facing President Obama

At 12:05 PM on Tuesday January 20, Barack Obama will have become the country’s 44th President.  And at precisely that time, the new president will be the man the nation will look upon to cure all which ails her. Expectations are high.  And as if that alone was not enough of a burden, the world will also expect much from the new president. Few presidents have taken office with more challenges than those which will face President Obama.

Nationally, Obama’s must deal with a number of key issues with the economy heading the list of priorities.  Among these issues are;

  • the economy – Wall street collapse, jobs, home mortgage crisis
  • healthcare reform
  • education reform
  • homeland security
  • reduction of American dependency on foreign oil and the implementation of new energy sources
  • an end to partisan politics and the restoration of trust in government

On the world front the number one issue remains terrorism along with,

  • the end of the Iraq war
  • stepping up the fight in Afghanistan
  • the Iran nuclear threat
  • the increasingly dangerous Pakistan
  • the Israeli-Palestinian conflict
  • Korea’s Kim Jong
  • Russia’s Putin
  • restoration of respect from the world community which has taken a brutal beating under Bush

The tasks at hand are daunting.  Obama has inherited a veritable Rubik’s cube of crises both domestic and foreign as an anxious but hopeful country watches.

Keeping the Dream Alive

A day before he was to be sworn in as 44th President of the United States, Obama visited an emergency boy’s shelter, rolled up his sleeves and helped paint a wall.

While some may view this act as empty showmanship; a gesture meant only to gain public adoration for the image he hopes to culitvate, it does in fact say much about the man he is.  If Barack Obama was indeed a shallow man of words, with no history to back up his grand oratory, then they’d be right.  He truly would be nothing more than another run-of-the-mill power hungry politician.  But if anyone did choose to view Obama in this way, they’d be wrong.

Obama graduated from Harvard, editor of the National Law Review and could of chosen employment with a dozen or more Wall Street firms.  He held the golden goose and a six figure salary was his for the taking.  Instead, he moved to Chicago and took on a role as a community organizer which paid him $10,000 a year.  The Obama haters and cynics out there will claim that it was all part of a diabolical plan on his part – a plan which had him care little of the homeless and the poor and the direction the country was headed toward.  A plan with one single goal – to become President of the United States.

For anyone who does view Obama’s actions in this way, I can only believe that they refuse or are unable to see the entire man, his record, his actions and his words for what they are.

I believe Barack Obama.  I believe him when he says the country can become a better place and in turn, that we can all have a better world.  And I believe him when he says that working together, it can truly happen.  It is encouraging to read polls which indicate that 66% of Americans (36% being Republicans) are now optimistic for the future of the country.  Optimistic at a time when the country is suffering through the worst financial crisis since the Great Depression, a time when one in four homes are facing foreclosure and jobs are being lost at an alarming rate – at a time when the country is fighting two wars and the threat of terrorism is banging at the door.

This is remarkable and the reason for American’s optimism can only be attributed to Barack Obama and the hopes and dreams he instills in the nation and in the world at large through not only his words…but his actions as well.

Bush The Bust

Pun intended.
